School and study time

After primary school, Bürger first attended the Heinrich Böll School (Integrated Comprehensive School) in his home town and in mid-2002 switched to the upper level of the Oswald von Nell Breuning School in Rödermark . Citizens obtained their general higher education entrance qualification ( Abitur ) there in 2005 and began studying the department of spoken theater at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . In 2007 he switched to the opera singing department.

Related to Rio Reiser

Around 20 years before Björn Bürger was born, student Ralph Christian Möbius lived from 1965 to 1968 in Nieder-Roden , since 1979 part of the city of Rodgau, on the same street where Bürger grew up. Möbius, known under the name Rio Reiser as the front man of the band Ton Steine Scherben , aroused the interest of the piano student Bürger with his early socially critical protest songs and late romantic love ballads as early as the late 1990s.

Musical career

With the support of his parents, the student Björn Bürger received piano lessons at the local free music school at an early age, and he taught himself to play the guitar. His piano teacher Benjamin Schütze made him aware of Rio Reiser and Bürger began to interpret his music in a playful and vocal way. In addition to piano training, he also took singing lessons from Gottfried Kärner, the director of the Polyhymnia Pop Choir in his hometown, in which Bürger also sang.

While still at school, Bürger was initially a singer in the band Up To Now, and later an active member of the South Hessian artist group Pro-these and the theater group MomentMal . With this he designed and performed the musical Herr Fresssack und die Bremer Stadtmusikanten in the musical project of the Bad Nauheim music school in 2000 , which is based on the radio play of the same name with Ton Steine Scherben from 1973. Numerous solo appearances as a Rio Reiser interpreter followed. In 2003, Bürger received the cultural promotion award in his hometown “for his artistic work in the fields of singing, theater and piano” in 2002.

From 2007 to 2013 Bürger studied opera singing at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts in the class of Hedwig Fassbender . During his student days, in addition to other solo appearances as a Rio Reiser interpreter and guest roles as an opera singer, he already had four engagements in productions of the Frankfurt Opera . He also took part in various annual productions at his university, for example at the Höchst Opera Summer in the leading role of Osmin in Mozart's Singspiel Zaide and in the leading role of King Argante at the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe . He also appeared in the leading role of Victor Hugo in the world premiere of Paul Leonard Schäffer's operetta A Capitulation based on a libretto by Richard Wagner at the Festival of Young Artists in Bayreuth .

At the age of 27, Björn Bürger prevailed against eleven other young artists at the National Singing Competition in Berlin in the final in the Komische Oper Berlin in November 2012 and won first place, endowed with 10,000 euros.

Three months later, Björn Bürger and mezzo-soprano Dorottya Láng won one of the most highly endowed advancement awards for up-and-coming singers, the Emmerich Smola Prize. After a concert with the competition finalists in the Festhalle Landau , the audience decided on the awarding of the prizes, which were associated with a concert engagement with the German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken-Kaiserslautern .
