Black and Blue is an action thriller by Deon Taylor that was released in US cinemas in October 2019 and in German cinemas in November 2019.
action
After working for the US armed forces in Iraq and then graduating from the Police Academy with honors, Alicia West is a newcomer to the police force in New Orleans , where she used to grow up. At work, she witnesses the murder of a young drug dealer by corrupt police officers in a disused power station. Her body camera records what her colleagues did. When the police notice the witness of her crime, they hunt down Alicia and try to get hold of the body camera. Alica is shot here, but is able to flee. Since the killed drug dealer was close to a major drug dealer and the police officers pass Alicia off as his murderer, Alicia is subsequently not only wanted by the corrupt police officers, but also by the drug scene. With the help of her friend Milo "Mouse" Jackson, who works in a supermarket, Alica tries to secure the incriminating footage and hunt down the corrupt colleagues.

A first trailer was presented in June 2019.
A first screening took place in September 2019 as part of the UrbanWorld Film Festival, where it was shown as a graduation film. The film opened in US cinemas on October 25, 2019. It started in Germany on November 14, 2019. Here the film was approved by the FSK for ages 16 and up. The statement of reasons for the release states that the film has a gloomy, threatening and tense atmosphere almost throughout and that there are numerous action scenes and shootings, some with massive depictions of violence and killings. The depiction of the gangster worlds is recognizable for viewers from 16 years of age as part of the cinematic construct, which has no real role model function, and in the end there is also a clear victory of the good over corruption and crime.
reception
Reviews and grossing results
Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.
The film critic Antje Wessels writes that when the victims of police arbitrariness band together, it is a very symbolic act in which Deon Taylor does not drive in subtle ways, but still works both in terms of content and in the statement: “Because the more often the makers Here repeat scenes of the indiscriminate exercise of power against blacks and those who are allowed to describe their experiences with the authorities, the more one becomes aware of the extent of such real problems - and memories of the tonally completely differently localized but no less clear The Hate U Give are awakened. "Wessels describes Black and Blue as "racism accusation meets cop thriller," which works amazingly well most of the time. Only when the genre stereotypes take over in the second half of the film does the film lose credibility and tension.
The budget of around 12 million US dollars is offset by worldwide revenues of 22.7 million US dollars so far, of which the film alone has grossed around 22 million in North America.
