The Town of Blue Mounds is located in southern Wisconsin, in the southwestern suburb of the capital, Madison . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, located on the Mississippi , is around 165 km west-northwest; to Illinois it is around 70 km south.
The coordinates of the geographic center of the Town of Blue Mounds are 42 ° 59'07 "north latitude and 89 ° 46'35" west longitude. It extends over an area of 85.5 km². In the north-west lies the independent community of Blue Mounds , which is completely enclosed by the Town of Blue Mounds , but is not part of the town.

US Highways 18 and 151 run through the area of the Town of Blue Mounds in a west-east direction on a shared four-lane section . The Wisconsin State Highway 78 runs north-south through the town. In addition, the County Highway E, F and Z run through the town. All other roads are subordinate country roads and some unpaved roads.
A rail trail for hikers and cyclists runs parallel to the US 18 / US 151 road through the Military Ridge State Trail on the route of a former railway line of the Chicago and North Western Railway . In winter, the hiking trail can also be used with snowmobiles.
The nearest airport is Dane County Regional Airport in Wisconsin's capital Madison (around 55 km east-northeast).
