List of Austrian Foreign Ministers

Austrian Foreign Minister since 1918

  • Heads of Austrian foreign policy marked with *) were Chancellors who also ran the State Office for Foreign Affairs and the Foreign Ministry.
  • Marked with **) from 1923 to 1938 and from 1945 to 1959 were Federal Chancellors who headed the Foreign Office section in the Federal Chancellery itself. Foreign ministers in the Chancellery ran these agendas in other federal governments of the time.
  • The first state secretaries of the first as well as the first of the second republic were not state secretaries in today's sense (high officials under a minister), but it was the name of the ministerial post. Minister and Secretary of State only existed during the politically sensitive occupation. The agency was the Foreign Office, an independent Foreign Ministry existed from 1918 to 1923 and has existed since 1959.
