Burgrave of Glatz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Burgrave of Glatz ( Kladský purkrabí in Czech ) was a royal official who was the governor of the Bohemian King at the castle in Glatz ( Kladsko in Czech ) . Since the Kłodzko Land , which was called "Provincia Kladsko" at the beginning of the 12th century, had a special position in the Bohemian State Association, the burgrave office was often given to members of the high Bohemian nobility "in full control". The most famous burgraves were the Witigone Witiko von Prčice and Ernst von Hostýně (Arnošt z Hostiného) , the father of the first Prague Archbishop Ernst von Pardubitz .

history

The highest state official in Glatzer was initially referred to as "Castellanus" or "Praefectus". The title "Burchgravius" is documented for the first time in 1262. From 1305 he was occasionally titled and from 1360 mostly as "captain", sometimes as "bailiff".

As the king's deputy, the burgrave was responsible for legal, military and administrative tasks. He was chairman of the noble or male court of the Glatzer feudal people . Only when he denied a defendant his rights in this position could the defendant file an appeal with the Prague court . Changes to the city law in the royal cities of Glatz, Habelschwerdt , Wünschelburg and Landeck required his approval. As the highest commander in command of the country, he was also responsible for protecting it and for keeping castles and towns in a state of defense. He commanded the feudal men and their squires as well as mercenaries who were to be provided by the cities. In addition, he was obliged to keep the royal mills, which were of great importance for the supply of the city, operational at all times and to collect customs duties and taxes, unless the estates were responsible for this. After all, he had to take care of the maintenance of the eight Czech hereditary guards at the Kłodzko Castle, who had their residence on the Piltsch royal estate . As the king's governor, he was also responsible for the allocation of land to the locators and judges .

The burgrave had one or more notaries available to assist him, as well as a pledge who was responsible for summoning and executing the court orders. Tax officials (collectores sen receptores bernae) were responsible for collecting the state taxes, and forest officials (officiales forestarii) for the royal forests .

Widows, orphans and clergymen were subject to the special protection of the burgrave. In relation to the responsible Archdiocese of Prague, he was responsible for the right to present vacant priestly positions in those churches that were under the king's patronage in the Kłodzko region.

The office of governor was introduced towards the end of the 14th century . Nevertheless, the burgrave who was subordinate to him continued to serve at times. It was not until 1459 that King Georg von Podiebrad elevated the Glatzer Land to the County of Glatz .
