The Campbell County is a county in the state of Wyoming , which takes its name from John A. Campbell , the First Governor of Wyoming , is derived. At the 2010 census , Campbell County's population was 46,133. The county seat is Gillette .

The county covers an area of 12,436 square kilometers; of which 12 square kilometers (0.10 percent) are water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Powder River County (Montana), Weston County , Crook County , Converse County , Sheridan County, and Johnson County .

history

Campbell County was already used by Native Americans to hunt buffalo and antelope 10,000 years ago . But it was not until the end of the 19th century that farmers settled down and started raising sheep . Campbell County was founded in 1911. It is named after John Allen Campbell , the first governor of the Wyoming Territory.

Today, 30 percent of the coal produced in the United States comes from Campbell County.

As of the 2000 census , Campbell County's population was 33,698. There were 12,207 households and 9,008 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.06% White, 0.15% African American, 0.93% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, and 1.12% other races Groups; 1.34% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.53% percent of the population.

Of the 12,207 households, 43.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.80% were married couples living together, 8.80% percent were a single mother, 26.20% were non-families. 20.20% were single households and 3.90% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over.
