Carl Gerold Fürst (born February 17, 1933 in Vienna ; † August 7, 2012 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian canon lawyer . He was one of the leading experts on Eastern Church Law and from 1978 to 1990 was in charge of the revision of the code of law for the churches of the Orient united with Rome .

Life

Carl Gerold Fürst studied law at the University of Vienna from 1951 to 1960, as well as philosophy and Catholic theology in Innsbruck and Rome . In 1960 he received his doctorate in law in Vienna . He was a research assistant at the University of Innsbruck and at the Institute for Canon Law at the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg . After his habilitation in 1966, he received the license to teach canon law at the law and political science faculty of Salzburg University . On October 1st, 1970 he was appointed associate professor in Salzburg.

In 1971 he was offered a professorship for canon law, especially ecclesiastical legal history, at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . 1980 to 1982 he was dean of the theological faculty, later vice dean. In 1998 he retired .

Carl Gerold Fürst was in the leadership of the interdenominational society for the law of the Eastern Churches for over 20 years and was its honorary president. He was on the board of directors of the Consociatio Internationalis Studio Iuris Canonici Promovendo for over 10 years . He regularly gave lectures in his field of Eastern Church Law at the canonical faculties of the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome , at the Roman Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and the Catholic Péter Pázmány University in Budapest .

Carl Gerold Fürst was Commander of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . He was also a member of the Catholic student associations KÖStV Nibelungia Vienna and KDStV Arminia Freiburg im Breisgau .

Fürst was considered to be one of the most well-known and distinguished scholars in the field of law in the Eastern Uniate Churches. In his teaching and research focus, he published numerous scientific papers.

Fürst was involved in numerous commissions and committees. He was a permanent and approved lawyer for all instances at the archiepiscopal officials in Freiburg , Bamberg and Cologne and at the episcopal officials in Rottenburg-Stuttgart and Trier .

He was a member of the permanent commission of the German , Austrian and Swiss Bishops 'Conference as well as the Bishop of Luxembourg for the publication of liturgical books in the German-speaking area since 1969 and a member of the permanent commission of the German and Austrian Bishops' Conference for the publication of the praise of God since 1970.

Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1978 as a consultor in the Pontifical Commission for the revision of the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium (CCEO), the code of law that came into force in 1991 for the so-called Uniate Eastern Churches, which also belong to the Catholic Church (1978–1990). Pope John Paul II thanked him by name in his address on the presentation of the code of law for the Eastern Catholic Churches at the 28th General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on October 25, 1990.

Since 1990 he has been consultor of the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts . Since 1993 he has been a member of the board of directors of the Consociatio Internationalis Iuris Canonici Promovendo. In 1994/95, Fürst was president of the scientific committee for the Symposium International sur le Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium at the University of St. Esprit in Kaslik, north of Beirut in Lebanon .

As chairman of the Eastern Churches Working Group in Freiburg im Breisgau (1979 to 1985 and again since 1989) he set the tone in ecumenism . From 1983 to 1991 he was general secretary of the International Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches. Since 1989 he has been President of the Board of Trustees of the Romanian Institute / Romanian Library in Freiburg. Since 1991, Prince was President of the International and Interdenominational Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches.
