Carl Ludwig Engel
Johann Carl Ludwig Engel (born July 3, 1778 in Berlin , † May 14, 1840 in Helsinki ) was a German-Finnish architect and painter . He was a college friend of Karl Friedrich Schinkel .
Life
Carl Ludwig Engel was born the son of a Berlin master bricklayer and studied architecture from 1800 to 1804 at the local building academy. Unemployed due to the French occupation, he entered the Russian service and went to Reval as a town builder in 1809 and then as head of the new building committee in Helsinki, which was then in Russia. In 1824 he became general director of construction for the Grand Duchy of Finland .
Along with Alvar Aalto, Engel was the most important builder in Finland. He built u. a. in Helsinki the Senate and the university in classical strict form, but also shaped the face of other Finnish cities significantly. Many of his designs were only realized or completed after his death.
