List of grape varieties

Catalanesca bianca , also called Catalana or Uva Catalana , is a white grape variety from the Vesuvian area of Monte Somma in Italy . The late ripening grape has only been officially allowed to be further processed into wine since 2006 .

history

It is believed that the grape was imported from Catalonia to Italy around 1450 . Between Somma Vesuviana and Terzgino , the grape immediately took root on the volcanic soil .

The Catalanesca grape was then used by the local farmers to make wine . Only the excess grapes were used as table grapes . For decades, the Catalanesca was only registered as a table grape in the regional registers of Campania , so that official wine-making was prohibited.

Since 2006, the grape can officially be used for winemaking. At first it was only allowed as an addition to other wines. Since 2008 , the grape has also been used for the production of single-origin Catalanesca white wine , sparkling wine and passito (Italian for liqueur wines ).

Growing area

The Catalanesca grape variety is grown in the area around Somma Vesuviana, Sant'Anastasia and Pollena Trocchia . The late-ripening grape variety is harvested between the first ten days of October and the third ten days of November.

properties

The grapes are medium in size and slightly elongated in shape. The berries have a thick, greenish skin , which turns golden yellow as they ripen . The fruit itself is white and fleshy and rich in grape seeds.

The Catalanesca grape has a high sugar content , which makes it well suited for winemaking . Due to its sweet taste, it is also eaten at the table. The characteristics of the grape led to the recognition of the Catalanesca del Monte Somma IGT ( Indicazione Geografica Tipica , is the quality level of Italian wine) at European level in 2011 .

Wine

Even before the official approval in 2008, winemaking was done almost exclusively by Vesuvian farmers. The wine itself is shiny, straw yellow in color . The bouquet is reminiscent of yellow peach and minerals from the volcanic soil. Furthermore, this acidic wine is associated with aromas of yellow flowers , exotic fruits and citrus fruits . It goes well with food , with a fresh but dry aroma . These are e.g. B. shellfish and chickpeas , but also buffalo mozzarella or Neapolitan pizzas without tomatoes .
