Cauayan City ( Filipino : Lungsod ng Cauayan ) is a Philippine Component City in the province of Isabela , in the administrative region II, Cagayan Valley. It has 129,523 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who lived in 65 barangays . It is classified as a third income class community in the Philippines and as partially urbanized . The name Cauayan means bamboo in the language of the Gaddang tribe, the first settlers in the area.
Cauayan City is in the center of the province, on the western foothills of the Sierra Madre and on the banks of the Cagayan River . It is 375 km north of Manila and is accessible via the Marhalika Highway . It has an airport that is served by the Cebu Pacific airline four times a week. Their neighboring communities are Alicia and Angadanan in the south, Benito Soliven in the east, Cabatuan , Luna and San Mateo in the west, and Reina Mercedes in the north.
Cauayan was founded in 1740 on the banks of the Cagayan. After a series of floods, the settlement was moved to a higher area at the beginning of the 19th century. On March 30, 2001, the community was given Component City status by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo .
