San Mateo ( Filipino : Bayan ng San Mateo ) is a Filipino municipality in the province of Isabela , Administrative Region II, Cagayan Valley. It has 64,505 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who lived in 33 barangays . It is classified as a first income class community in the Philippines and as partially urbanized .
San Mateo is in the west of the province. The community lies at the foot of the Cordillera Central massif in the west, in the valley of the Magat Rivers . It is 351 km north of Manila and can be reached via the Marhalika Highway . The nearest airport is in Cauayan City , which is served by the Cebu Pacific airline four times a week. Their neighboring communities are Alfonso Lista in the west, Ramon in the south, Alicia in the southeast, Cauayan City in the east, Cabatuan and Aurora in the north.
San Mateo is best known for the cultivation of the mung bean . This is needed to make the Halo-halo dessert, popular in the Philippines . The mung bean is also known as the "black gold of San Mateo, Isabela".
