Cedric (first name)
Cedric or Cédric , Cedrik or Cedrick is a male given name .
Origin and meaning
The name was first mentioned in 1820 by Sir Walter Scott in his novel Ivanhoe as a personal name for the father Ivanhoe . According to the Encyclopædia Britannica , the name Cedric could be a modification of the Anglo-Saxon royal name Cerdic . The name Cerdic comes from the Celtic and can be derived from the Celtic-Welsh words "carad" (loved) or "caru" (love). Another meaning emerges from the Celtic words "kad" (war) and "ric" (ruler), so its meaning would be "ruler of war", "warlord".
distribution
The name is mainly in use in the English-speaking area as well as in the French-speaking area with the spelling Cédric . In Germany the name has been given regularly since the late 1980s. The spelling Cedrik is also common here, more rarely also Cedrick.
Cedric was particularly popular in Germany in 2001.
The name gained greater fame through the fictional character Cedric Errol (in German translations also Cedrik Errol ) in the novel The Little Lord by Frances Hodgson Burnett . More recently, the name was popularized by Cedric Diggory from the Harry Potter novels and films.
