Champions (TV title: Saison der Sieger , Original Title: That Championship Season ) is an American drama from 1982 directed by Jason Anthony Miller . The film is a film adaptation of Miller's novel of the same name from 1973, which won the Pulitzer Prize .

It has been 25 years since the 1957 Fillmore High School basketball team won the Pennsylvania state championship. The coach at the time and 4 winners come together regularly to relive the glory of their brilliant days.
As young teammates, they were able to recognize their colleagues' moves on the pitch without fail. As middle-aged men, everyone faces their own different midlife crisis. With the ex-coach, who treats the problems as if his boys had a bad game, the friends' longstanding loyalty to one another begins to dissolve.
George Sitkowski is Mayor of Scranton and is engaged in a violent re-election campaign. James Daley is an over-excited and underpaid headmaster, while his brother, Tom, is a tramp with a serious drinking problem. Phil Romano is the richest among them. He often bends over the law and even betrays a friend to serve his own needs. George urgently needs his support.
The intended solemn nature of this reunion has quickly passed. Various disputes arise among the four old teammates who quickly clash. The coach's narrow-mindedness and his selfish disregard for fair play come up again and the lack of the star player of the team at the time, who hates the coach, emphasizes the futility and emptiness of this meeting.

The actor Bruce Dern was awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1983 for his performance . Director Miller received a Golden Bear nomination .

The film received a positive rating from 60% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes . The average rating is 6.2 out of 10 points.
The film service ruled that the film was "[d] a bit awkward in terms of the ramaturgic", but that it offered "an impressive performance".
