The Kobernaußerwald road ( L 508 ) is a country road in Upper Austria . It connects Straßwalchen ( Wiener Straße  B 1 ) via the Kobernaußerwald and the places Friedburg and Lohnsburg with Ried im Innkreis, 34 km away (junction Innkreis Autobahn  A 8 , Rieder Straße  B 141 to the east and west).

The road is thus the main traffic route in the north-east-south-west course from the central Innviertel to the city of Salzburg , the Salzburg Lake District and the Salzkammergut ( Mondseeland , via Mondsee Straße B 154), and is with the Frankenburger Straße  (L 509) Ried- Vöcklamarkt and the Hausruck Straße  (B 143) Ried– Vöcklabruck and its branch, Tanzbodenstraße  (L 1071) to Schwanenstadt , one of the few developed Hausruck and Kobernaußerwald crossings.

Course and expansion

The road begins in Friedburg a few kilometers north of Straßwalchen on Braunauer Straße  (B 147), leads through the upper Weißenbachtal over Schneegattern , and is from Höcken (municipality of Lengau ) / Hocheck (municipality of Pöndorf)  (km 5.8, connection of the L 1282 Pöndorfer Straße ) except for the Kobernaußerwaldhöhe. The top of the pass is on the Steiglberg near the Kobernaußerwaldwarte (village of Stelzen) at 767  m above sea level. A.  (km 12.5 ). To the north via Kobernaußen and Lohnsburg , where it crosses the valley of the Waldzeller Ache , it is winding, with a few steep sections, but otherwise quickly passable. At Gobrechtsham ( Neuhofen im Innkreis municipality ), just outside Ried, it joins Oberinnviertler Straße  (L 503) after 30.1 km . ! 548.1005055513.3589045

Almost a third of the route is covered with speed restrictions, a fifth is local area (5.5 km, 8 in total). Although Kobernaußer Strasse never had the status of a federal road , it is one of the important roads that overcomes the Hausruck / Kobernaußerwald traffic obstacle. It competes with route of the B 141 / E 552 via Altheim  - B 148 via Braunau  - B 156 via Oberndorf to Salzburg, which is better developed and pass-free, but significantly longer - also due to the increasing expansion of the B 1 (A 1- Connection to Eugendorf , bypasses Henndorf  2009, Neumarkt 1989, Straßwalchen start of construction 2010). This means that the bottleneck between Höcken and Friedburg, as well as the Innviertel section, which is particularly prone to accidents, is increasingly becoming a problem. In 2009 it was referred to as “the third main problem child in the traffic infrastructure in the Innviertel” (next to the B 147 in two sections). For the continuation of the southern expansion to Straßwalchen, which was analyzed in 2004 as one of the "priority issues of the InnviertelHausruck region in the area of road traffic", several variants have been discussed over the decades; corridor studies are in progress in 2010. In the north, a bypass of Lohnsburg seems to be a priority. An extension of the Rieder Nordspange (B 141) southeast almost directly to the end point of the L 508 has also been discussed for many years.

history

The Innviertel in the Archduchy of Austria above the Enns. 1779
in the middle of the train Straſzwalchen - Friburg - Weiʃenbach - Hōhnhart Wald - Kobernauʃen - Lohnspurg - Ried

The route from Straßwalchen, an important traffic junction between the Salzburg / Upper Austrian Alps and Alpine foothills, to Ried was a Roman road as early as 200 AD , remains were found under the - old - road on the Wienerhöhe .

Around 1476 the Rieder Straße is mentioned as Sämerstraße ( hat people of the Bavarian forestry supervisor Hochkuchl in Stelzen and Kobernaußen, and the forestry supervisor against the Mättigtal in Erb ), along the border to the “royal” Austrian south-east part of the Kobernaußerwald. The toll house in Straßwalchen (today the municipal office) was the triangle between the Prince Archdiocese of Salzburg and Austria and Bavaria.

At the time of the occupation during the Napoleonic Wars  (1809–1815) - the Innkreis had belonged to Austria ob der Enns since 1779  (its own crown land  1783/84) - the post and vicinal road Ried - Salzburg (L 508 - B 1) was so much used like the route Braunau - Friedburg - Pöndorf - Vöcklabruck (B 147 - L 508 - L 1282 - B 1). In 1822 the road was given as an important military march route, as part of the routes from Altaussee / Ischl (Salzkammergut) to Passau , via St. Gilgen , Mondsee , Zell am Moos , then from Ried via Schärding (No. 339) or Riedau / Zell adP , Münzkirchen (No. 345), as well as between the district towns of Salzburg and Ried (No. 296) - the province of Salzburg had also belonged to Austria ob der Enns since 1816 as the Salzburg district . Their length from Straßwalchen to Kobernaußen was given as 3¼ miles, to Lohnsburg 3¾, to Ried 5¼ miles ( Austrian post miles of 7.59 km), their expansion as a Chaussee and Landstrasse .

From 1867 to 1926 the state administration ran the street as Kobernau's (s) er Bezirksstraße .

In the 1980s, the south-facing section of road between Schneegattern and Steiglberg, which led from the Schneegattern glassworks (closed in 1924) over the Wienerhöhe to 751 m, was abandoned (now only a forest and hiking trail), and from Höcken / Hocheck in the Weißenbachtal and the Schwarzmoosbach built along a spacious upgraded route with a connection to Frauschereckstraße  (L 1061). There was no continuation at the time, however, one could not decide whether the route via Pöndorf, via the old route of the Steindorf – Schneegattern branch line of the Mattigtalbahn (Waldbahn 1887–1954, Schneegattern † 1961) to Friedburg, or even directly through the Krenwald should be led to Straßwalchen, so that today the route - coming down from Steiglberg - ends suddenly and continues to the left or right on a small open-air road. With the new construction of the Straßwalchen bypass, these plans have become topical again. Within the Inn-Salzach-Euregio (founded in 1994), transnational transport projects can also be implemented differently than in the 1980s.
