Chase Andrew Budinger (born May 22, 1988 in Encinitas , California ) is a retired American basketball player and now a professional beach volleyball player .
Basketball career
college
Budinger got a lot of offers from other college teams like UCLA and USC , but then decided to play for the University of Arizona . In his freshman season, he started all 30 games and scored 15.6 points per game. At the end of that season, Budinger announced that he would be staying with Arizona for his sophomore season, although there was speculation that he would switch to the NBA before graduating from college . Even so, he announced in his junior season that he would sign up for the NBA draft . On the last day of the draft cancellation period, however, he withdrew his application and initially stayed in Arizona.
After the 2008-09 college season, he announced that he would be drafting for the second time.
NBA
In the 2009 NBA draft , Budinger was selected 44th by the Detroit Pistons . However, they transferred him to the Houston Rockets that same night . On February 23, 2011, he managed a career high of 30 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers . The Rockets won the game 124-119.
During the NBA lockout for the 2011/12 season , Budinger originally signed a contract with Lokomotive Kuban Krasnodar , but this was not finalized as the lockout ended earlier than expected.
In the shortened 2011/12 season Budinger completed 58 games for the Rockets and put on similar statistics as in his first two years. However, he increased his hit rate for three-point throws to 40.2%. During NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest 2012 Budinger was one of the participants. Although the Rockets ended the season with a positive record of 34 wins and 32 losses, they missed the play-offs .
Shortly before the 2012 NBA draft, the Rockets transferred Budinger to the Minnesota Timberwolves , who in return sent their 18th pick to Houston.
After three seasons in Minnesota, Budinger was transferred to the Indiana Pacers for the 2015/16 season . He was released from his contract on March 5, 2016, before the end of the season. Three days later, on March 8th, Budinger signed with the Phoenix Suns for the remainder of the season .
2016 to 2017
In October 2016 he signed a contract with the Spanish first division club Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz until the end of the season .
Beach volleyball career
Budinger has been playing beach volleyball on the US AVP Tour and the FIVB World Tour since 2018 , initially with two-time Olympian Sean Rosenthal and since 2019 with Casey Patterson .
