Christopher Jeffrey "Chris" Richards (born March 28, 2000 in Birmingham , Alabama ) is an American football player who has been with FC Bayern Munich since July 2018 .
Career
society
Richards started playing soccer at the age of four. With the Hoover Soccer Club and the Birmingham United Soccer Association , the defensive talent has repeatedly won the state championships of Alabama . Since there were limited development opportunities for him in the state, the teenager joined the FC Dallas youth program in 2016 . Here too, Richards was able to draw attention to himself by winning several personal awards. As a result, the German record champions FC Bayern Munich - who have a partner program with FC Dallas - noticed him and invited the defensive player to training. Here Richards was able to convince again, which is why the German record champions took him to the FC Bayern Campus - initially on loan for a year . In his first season with the U19 team , the central defender developed into a regular player, as a result of which the Munich team finally signed him for four and a half years. In August 2019 he finally celebrated his professional debut in the 2-1 away win of the second team against Halleschen FC . He made his Bundesliga debut on June 20, 2020 (33rd match day) in a 3-1 win at home against SC Freiburg with a substitute for Javi Martínez from the 84th minute.
National team
Richards played for the US U20 team for the first time against Jamaica in September 2018 . With this he also took part in the CONCACAF U-20 championship in the same year , which he won with the USA. Richards made two appearances for his country during the tournament and was on the pitch for 90 minutes in the final in a 2-0 win against Mexico . He was also in the US squad at the U20 World Cup in Poland in 2019 and played the full distance in every game. In the quarterfinals, the team was eliminated against Ecuador .
successes
Style of play
Richards is a modern defender with strengths in building up the game, he is tactically and technically at a high level and, due to his speed, is also used on the flanks. His role models include Jérôme Boateng and Carles Puyol .
Family and successes in basketball
Richards comes from a sports-loving family. Mother Carrie played soccer in various junior women's teams, but did not continue her career because the sport was hardly promoted in Alabama. His father Ken was a professional basketball player and was active in Iceland , Bolivia and Australia , among others . Chris himself also played basketball successfully for a long time in high school , won several personal awards, and was on the verge of earning a university sports scholarship. Due to his small body size for basketball, however, he decided at the age of 16 to focus fully on football.
