Christian Schulze (born October 13, 1946 in Biesnitz , today Görlitz ) is a German sculptor and restorer and lives in Dresden .

Live and act

Christian Schulze was born in Biesnitz in 1946 as the son of a decorative painter and grew up in this suburb of Görlitz. His father, who had attended the Johannes Wüsten painting school in Görlitz Kahle 7 as a teenager , was friends with Walther Rhaue, a trained painter and former student of the Breslau Art Academy , who had been running an artistically ambitious pottery on the neighboring property since 1927 . There he discovered his special love for clay early on. Later he attended the painting and drawing circle of Werner Panitz, a master student of Otto Mueller , in preparation for the entrance examination for an apprenticeship at the Meissen porcelain factory . During his training as a porcelain lathe operator in Meißen from 1963 to 1966, he received artistic support from Lothar Sell and Peter Strang . From 1966 to 1971 he studied with Gerd Jaeger , Herbert Naumann and Walter Arnold at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts . Following his diploma thesis, the design and execution of a porcelain wall for the stairwell of the Scientific-Technical Center of the Fine Ceramics Industry of the GDR in Meißen (WTK), he worked as a design sculptor in this institute from 1971 to 1974.

Since 1974 he has been working as a freelancer in Dresden . From 1975 to 1978 he received a grant for young artists. Study trips took him to the Baltic States , Poland and Hungary . Since for years he only had his own living room in an old Dresden farmhouse and later in an attic as a work space, he mainly concentrated on the year-round outdoor work in sandstone . A series of larger works for public spaces was created, partly at sculpture symposia .

In 1979, sculptors were sought for the faithful restoration of the auditorium of the Dresden Semperoper . He took the first opportunity since completing his studies to be able to model larger works in clay under good working conditions in the specially built, temporary sculptor's joint studio of the Semperoper. In 1982, after completing the sculpting work there, he was able to move into his own studio for the first time . He had a ceramic kiln built and began to work primarily in terracotta . He soon found his own, somewhat more abstract form, appropriate to the material.

Since Saxony tried hard to close the countless wounds that the Second World War had left on the historical heritage, he continued to receive many challenging and interesting tasks in the field of reconstruction and restoration in the following decades , but tried despite the often high workload always not to lose sight of his free artistic work. A grant from the Kulturfonds Foundation in 1992 was both recognition and support. In the meantime, however, he saw that his world of ceramic shapes, developed according to the material, would always be limited to a play with proportions. When working with sandstone, it was also important to consider the material. Now he was looking for a way to react to what he had experienced immediately and in a way that was easy to understand using the language of the sculptor. In addition to being interested in the human body, he also wanted to express feelings and human individuality. He began systematically to investigate, regardless of future material implementation, how conscious changes in proportions, individual body shapes, facial expressions, gestures and strong movements of the figure in space can be made to serve the respective message. If it is possible to bring strong changes in shape of a figure into balance with one another, they can be perceived as natural body shapes. In 2004 he presented the results of his changing new way of working for the first time. If he was initially looking for a consistent break with his previous way of working, built internal forms soon tightened and enriched his sculptures again. He is always looking for the big shape that a topic can open up immediately, but wants to stay close to people in detail without digressions.
