Pfarrhaus Hauptstrasse 245a towards Wanner Strasse (2014)

The Christ Church is a Protestant church in the district of Wanne in the city of Herne , at Hauptstrasse 245. The building, which is designed in neo-Gothic style, was built in 1886 and 1887 based on a design by the Barmer architect Gerhard August Fischer . Fischer was previously responsible for several new churches in neighboring Bochum and for the St. Bonifatius church in Herne, of which only the tower has survived after severe war damage . According to his planning, the new building of the Protestant Johanneskirche in Eickel was built in 1895/1896 .

The entry of the Christ Church and the associated rectory ( location ) as a monument in the sense of the Monument Protection Act of North Rhine-Westphalia in the list of monuments of the city of Herne took place on April 10, 1987 (monument No. A 24).

history

The Evangelical Church Community Wanne formed the north-western part of the Evangelical Church Community Eickel until it was spun off on October 1, 1884. Its expansion initially extended to the area of the political community of Wanne, excluding the parts belonging to the Evangelical Church Community of Crange. Until their own church building was built, the parishioners used a hall rented by the Eickel pastor. In 1885 the resolution was passed for the new building, for the realization of which the church tax was raised and the specially founded church building association carried out collections. The building site was donated to the community by the church master August Overhof . On July 11, 1886, introduced on August 5, 1885 as the first pastor of the congregation took Eduard Hellweg from Breckerfelde the foundation stone before, in the presence of the General Superintendent of the Evangelical Church in Westphalia, Gustav Nebe , was on November 10, 1887, the birthday of Luther , the Inauguration will be celebrated. In 1892 the area of the community was enlarged by adding that part of the Evangelical Community of Eickel that was north of the railway and was thus separated from the actual community. Since the tasks could no longer be managed by a pastor, also due to the strong population growth, the position of an assistant chaplain was set up in 1893 , which was converted into a second pastor's position in 1895. Three more pastors were to be added by 1910. Furthermore, in 1896 the appointment of a Masurian pastor who alternately in Herten and Bickern the church service held in Masurian language. The evening supper celebrations in Bickern, Röhlinghausen and Eickel in 1897 were attended by 390 Masurians. In 1907 and 1908, a second church, the Luther Church , was built on the street “Our Fritz” . Since its completion, the church on Hauptstrasse (formerly Hindenburgstrasse) has been called "Christ Church". At the same time, separate pastors' apartments were set up for each church.

A separate community cemetery ( Lage ) was already in use in 1886. The Gottesacker, located on Claudiusstrasse, encompassed around one hectare in its facility , it was later expanded to around three hectares.

As the community grew, the members decided to build a community hall ( Lage ). Financially supported by the collieries Unser Fritz and Pluto , which paid a good two thirds of the land acquisition costs , the church master August Overhof was able to acquire his property on the corner of the main street to Stöckstraße (formerly Kirchstraße) opposite the church. In the years 1893/1894 the two - storey, two- part new building followed, with five axes on Kirchstrasse and eight on Hauptstrasse, where the entrance was also in the middle. In addition to rooms for the parish council, it accommodated a kindergarten (toddler school) and church-related associations (women's aid and trombone choir) as well as apartments for pastors and sextons on the upper floor. At the beginning of the 1970s, the parish hall was abandoned in favor of a commercial building complex (including Hertie ; closed in 1986).

During the Second World War, the Christ Church was also damaged, after which the services had to be relocated to the parish hall until Pentecost 1945. In 1952 it was possible to repair the comparatively minor damage. The chancel received new windows depicting the crucifixion of Christ . Another window on the left shows Moses with the Ten Commandments , on the right a representation of John the Baptist .

As part of the restructuring of the “ Evangelical Church District of Herne ” (Herne and Castrop-Rauxel), in the course of the dissolution of the Wanne-Mitte parish in 2010, the parishes of the Christ Church, the Resurrection Church and the Twelve Apostles Church became the “Matthew Parish Tub "formed. As an “open” or “city church”, the Christ Church is open to the faithful several times a week for a so-called “five-minute prayer”.

architecture

The three-aisled gallery church, designed in the form of neo-Gothic in red brick and with the use of sandstone to contour the architecture, faces west with its choir, while its main portal faces east to the main street. To the left and right of the portal there are flower medallions that show the date of the laying of the foundation stone and the inauguration. The tower has a tower clock in its upper half. The tower, which is centered on the main street and through which the church is entered, measures 6.6 meters in width and protrudes a good two meters from the actual nave. With a width of approx. 17 meters in the front part and a good 18 meters in the choir area, it is 34.5 meters deep. The church takes up approximately 640 m² according to its area.
