City of God is the third solo album by the German rapper Godsilla . It was released on October 26, 2007 on the independent label I Luv Money Records .

Emergence

After Godsilla his second album in 2006 mass hysteria had published initially followed in March 2007 re-release of his debut album Übertalentiert as a Premium Edition . The Berliner then recorded a joint album with King Orgasmus One , who owns the label I Luv Money Records . This was published under the title Dirty Euros 2 . Godsilla then recorded songs for his third solo album.

Meaning of the title

The title of the album is the Brazilian film City of God ( City of God ajar). This was created in 2002 and deals with the violence in the slums of Rio de Janeiro . Godsilla transfers this motif to his hometown Berlin on the sound carrier . At the same time, the title is also a play on words, as the abbreviation of the name Godsilla is also "God", so that Berlin is the "City of God", ie the city of Godsilla.

Musical style

City of God contains several songs that the stylistic direction of the battle rap are attributable. Fictitious opponents are insulted as artistically as possible. One example of this is the piece Südberlin Masculin . Furthermore, there are songs on the sound carrier that can be assigned to gangster rap . For example, in Kinder der Straße, the social problems of some Berlin districts are taken up. Godsilla also processes his own life in the lyrics, which is reflected, among other things, in melancholy pieces of music such as Cockaigne .

“My music consists of two aspects: On the one hand, the rough, battle-heavy, what you simply need in Berlin. [...] On the other hand, I want to point out social grievances without lifting my index finger. [...] At this moment, I am the mouthpiece for these people, uttering things that they don't dare to say or just don't know how to say. The record is carried by aggression, anger, pain, grief, but also hope. "

Backspin

The reviews of City of God were positive. The German hip-hop magazine Juice rated the album with four out of a possible six “crowns”. The editors point out that Godsilla's talent is "undisputed". The beats to be heard on the sound carrier offer, according to the juice , "little variety". Nevertheless, City of God is referred to as “the benchmark for all moons that are about to crash into some ghettos ”.

The whole and concentrated arsenal of the tried and tested curb terminology between ticked kilos and fucked kecks. And of course this simple, but extremely atmospheric delivery, which can even turn smooth nonsense lines like “Hand me the scepter, I'm Godsilla Che Guevaraor “I studied the game like an architectinto small manifestos - no It is a miracle that many believe they recognize a reincarnation of early Bushido in Godsilla . [...] His strengths become particularly evident on the numerous collab tracks. In addition to the powerful Aso intonation of the Orgi pupil and BMW member, both Bass Sultan Hengzt Singsanghooks [...] and Asek's warrior rhetoric mercilessly rub off. Yes, even Snaga and Alpa Gun are being beaten hard. [...] Only Fler [...] and label mate Sera Finale [...] know the elemental force of Godsilla grobmotorischem flow adequately meet. "

- Excerpts from the evaluation of the hip-hop magazine Juice

The German hip-hop magazine Backspin awarded City of God 3.5 out of a possible 5 points. The review highlights “the melancholy and gloomy beats”, which harmonize with the rapper's lyrics.

" With this CD, the Tempelhofer emphasizes that the rap card can no longer be imagined without him and that he is constantly developing. Because in addition to the usual hard songs by Godsilla, the chubby representatives and aggressive battle raps, which he sings again this time, he also lets you look deep into his emotional life. Among the 19 tracks are some songs in which the South Berliner strikes a rather calm note and raps surprisingly openly and honestly about his human side, socially critical aspects and his relationships with women. [...] With such variety, one is encouraged to listen to this long player several times. [...] One can definitely say that Silla The Killa improves from album to album, the ability to rap about emotional things stands out particularly on "City Of God". As a result, it doesn't appear softer, but more mature, so the songs seem even more believable, simply better. "
