Life

Claussen studied medicine at the universities of Bonn and Hamburg , where he his German medical state examination and the US ECFMG exam acquired and 1965 with his thesis on "Comparison of enteral absorption of digoxin and Digoxinestern" Dr. med. received his doctorate . During his studies, he attended as a Fellow of the studienstiftung abroad courses at the universities of Toulouse ( France ), Oxford ( England ), Oslo ( Norway ), Gothenburg ( Sweden ), Copenhagen and Aarhus (both Denmark ).

In the following years from 1965 to 1967 medical assistant in Hamburg and Simmerath ( Eifel ), from 1967 to 1970 worked as a scientific assistant at the University ENT Clinic of the Free University of Berlin , had research stays in the field of neurootology, which was still new at the time , from 1968 to 1969 Nils Gunnar Henriksson (1920–1999) in Lund ( Sweden ) and developed numerous neurootological tests such as " Cranio-Corpo-Graphie ".

In 1970 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin as the first university professor for neurootology in Germany ("Teaching about the healthy and sick function of the head senses"). The title of his habilitation thesis was: "On the recording and evaluation of selected quantitative equilibrium function tests". At that time, he had been developing the corresponding departments at the university clinics in Berlin and Würzburg in parallel since 1969 and from 1971 was head of department at the university ENT clinic in the head clinic of the University of Würzburg , where he retired in 1971 for neurootology.

From 1972 to 1974 he moved his research to Buenos Aires ( Argentina ), where he formulated his own concept of modern equilibriometry , the objective and quantitative function measurement of the sense of balance , with Juan Manuel Tato (1902-2004) and published it for the first time in a textbook. In addition, he was on several research stays with Ashton Graybiel in the sensory physiology laboratories of NASA in Pensacola (Florida) .

Until his retirement after completing the summer semester 2004, Claussen was a professor, since 1978 associate professor for neurootology at the "Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Patients" at the University of Würzburg. He examined the regulation of balance, the sensory functions of the hearing organs, as well as smell and taste perception.

Between 1967 and 1982 he set up a database in Würzburg with information on 30,000 neurootological patients. By evaluating this database, it was possible to draw conclusions about diseases such as dizziness , picture dancing and double vision, hearing disorders or noises in the ears ( tinnitus ). Since that time (1972) Claussen has had scientific collaborations with individual scientists and institutions on all continents.

In 1974 he was co-founder of the international " Society for Neurootology and Equilibriometry " (GNA) in Bad Kissingen and in 1981 of the " Society for the Research of Odor, Taste, Hearing and Balance Disorders " (4-G research), which he still presides over it today. Even after his retirement, he has held several honorary positions as president or board member of international specialist organizations.

Claussen was the organizer and leader of international congresses on neurootology and head disorders as well as their therapy, which he often held in his home town of Bad Kissingen. From 1974 to 2014 he organized the “International Neurootologist Congress” with participants from 33 countries.

At the invitation of the Art Academy of the State University of New York since 1975, and since 1976 at the University of Würzburg, he has been giving regular lectures on “the connections between science and art with practical examples”. In 2002 Claussen formulated the concept of “narrative sensologism” as a bridge between science, art and philosophy and gives lectures on the subject at home and abroad.

Claussen has been a founding member of the "Association for General Art Promotion" (VAK) in Lichtenberg (Upper Franconia) since 1987 and a founding member and vice-president of the European art association "Via Europae Sculpturarum" since 1997.

  • Turn-Run-Life . Poems. Self-published, Bad Kissingen

“Science is impression, art is expression,” says Claussen, because both start from an idea that then finds “shape” either in the artistic work or in scientific evidence. “Whatever man strives for in art, science, religion and philosophy is the truth - but how can we even capture it with our limited perception?” He asks.
