1990 season

Colorado won its first national championship in 1990 under Head Coach Bill McCartney, who led the team from 1982 to 1994. The national title was shared with Georgia Tech , which won the United Press International coaching poll, while Colorado won the Associated Press and Football Writers Association of America polls. The biggest arguments against Colorado were, on the one hand, that they had a loss and a tie, while Georgia Tech had a tie and no loss, and, on the other hand, Colorado's "unfair" victory in the Fifth Down Game against Missouri . Another major controversy was Colorado's Orange Bowl win over Notre Dame , which Colorado won in part due to a controversial clipping call that undid a Notre Dame touchdown . The main argument for Colorado was that they had a more difficult game plan than Georgia Tech. Colorado crowned the season with a 10-9 win over Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, a revenge for the 1989 Orange Bowl game, which Notre Dame won 21-6. Colorado's draw came against Tennessee , who were eighth in the first week of the season when Colorado was fifth. A week later, Colorado's only loss of the season came, with a 23:22 against Illinois . They finished the season for the second year in a row with a 7-0 record in the Big Eight Conference. They ended the season beating Notre Dame, who were number 1 until one loss in their penultimate regular season game.

Colorado has won 28 conference championships in over a century of college football history spanning five conferences.

Head coaches

In the Buffaloes' 125+ seasons, ten coaches have led the team to bowl games : Bunny Oakes , Dallas Ward , Bud Davis , Eddie Crowder , Bill Mallory , Bill McCartney , Rick Neuheisel , Gary Barnett , Dan Hawkins and Mike MacIntyre . Ten coaches have won the Buffaloes Conferencing Championships: Fred Folsom, Myron Witham, William Saunders, Oakes, Jim Yeager, Sonny Grandelius, Mallory, McCartney and Barnett. The Buffaloes won the national championship in 1990 and have won a total of 28 conference championships. McCartney leads the way in the number of coached games with 153, overall wins with 93 and conference wins with 58. Folsom had the longest tenure as head coach, remaining in that position for 15 seasons. Harry Heller and Willis Keinholtz share the top spot with the highest overall win rate. Both were in office for a single season and each won eight of the nine games with a win rate of 88.9%. Of the coaches who have been in office for more than one season, Folsom leads with a win rate of 76.5%. Based on the overall win rate, Davis is the worst coach the Buffaloes had at 20%. No Colorado coach was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame , although McCartney was inducted into the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame in 1996.

The last trainer, Mike MacIntyre, was hired on December 10, 2012. MacIntyre has a 20-29 record in four seasons in Colorado. In 2016 MacIntyre Colorado led to a 10-2 record in the regular season and thus to the Pac-12 championship game. It was Colorado's first winning season since 2005, ending a 10-year streak with a win rate below 50%. 2016 was also the best season for the Buffaloes since 2001. It was also the first time since the Big 12 Championship Game in 2005 that they played in a conference championship game. Mike MacIntyre was named 2016 Walter Camp Coach of the Year by the Walter Camp Foundation, the second Colorado soccer coach to receive the award (Bill McCartney, 1989). MacIntyre was also named 2016 Pac-12 Trainer of the Year, American Football Coaches Association's Trainer of the Year and Comeback Trainer of the Year, Associated Press Trainer of the Year, and Eddie Robinson Trainer of the Year for the Football Writers Association of America.
