The John Mackey Award has been awarded by the Nassau County Sports Commission since 2000 for the best tight end in the NCAA - Division-I FBS . It was named after John Mackey , the second person to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame solely for their achievements in the tight end position and considered the greatest player of all time in that position. The prize has been awarded fifteen times to date, with no player winning the prize twice. Fourteen of the winners made it into the national professional league, the National Football League .
