action

Abigail Clayton, who is actually the 17-year-old millionaire daughter Justine Walters, lives in a skyscraper on New York's Columbus Circle . She has not left her apartment in years and has an anxiety disorder . Her only confidante is Dr. Ray Fontaine. After the death of their neighbor, Charles Stanford and his girlfriend Lillian move into the vacant apartment. One day, drunk Charles beats Lillian up in the hallway and leaves her there. Abigail helps her and the two women become friends.

Lillian persuades Abigail to leave her apartment, which costs this great effort. When the two are in the hallway, Charles suddenly comes out of the elevator. While Abigail hides under a table in fear, Charles goes to her apartment and installs a virus on her computer . It turns out that Lillian and Charles are a crook couple and are working with Fontaine. Together they want to steal from Abigail.

The concierge Klandermann recognizes Charles as his cellmate, with whom he was in prison twelve years ago. He suspects that he is planning a fraud and tries to blackmail him. When Charles wants to kill him, Klandermann flees, runs in front of a bus and dies. Fearing that due to the media interest caused by Klandermann's death, the police will become aware of the trio, Fontaine wants to give up the plan to rob Abigail, whereupon Charles kills him.

Charles and Lillian later stage an argument in the course of which they come to Abigail's apartment. When Charles chokes Lillian, Abigail stabs him. Lillian convinces Abigail to give her money so she can escape. When Abigail transfers the money, the computer virus gives Lillian the bank password . Then she leaves the apartment and makes her way to the bank to empty Abigail's account. However, Abigail realizes that she was tricked. She manages to get her money safe, and she informs the press that the missing Justine Walters has reappeared, calls herself Abigail Clayton, and will appear in front of a bank. Lillian is arrested there. Abigail herself takes on Lillian's identity and leaves New York.
