Commissario Laurenti - Death Throws Long Shadows is a German crime film from 2008 by Hannu Salonen . The script by Lothar Kurzawa is based on the novel of the same name by Veit Heinichen . It is his fourth case for the Trieste Vice Questore Commissario Proteo Laurenti, embodied by Henry Hübchen . Barbara Rudnik is cast as Laurenti's wife Laura, Florian Panzner and Catherine Flemming work for him, and Sergej Moya and Sophia Thomalla play Laurenti's children Marco and Livia. Luise Berndt , Rolf Hoppe , Hanns Zischler , Ludwig Trepte , Inga Busch and Horst Krause are cast in leading roles . Katharina Thalbach and Christopher Buchholz appear as guests .
Das Erste offered the film when it was first broadcast with the words: “In addition to a gripping story about blackmail and morals, dark business and murderous family traditions, the film offers an extraordinary view of the Italian port city of Trieste beyond the tourist clichés. Henry Hübchen once again shines in the lead role as a grumpy and astute inspector. "
action
In a shooting in the Piazza Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo between a motorcyclist and two men, one of the people involved is killed. The incident happened to be witnessed by a kiosk owner who reported his observations to the investigating officers. For Commissario Proteo Laurenti everything looks like a failed document handover. The man killed was the grandson of the influential Salvio Giustina, so it should be certain that the second man was Michele Giustina, the brother of the man killed.
But even the deaf young beggar Irina, who had still tried to take care of the victim, could help Commissario Laurenti if she had not disappeared without a trace. She secretly took the documents, which puts her in great danger, because both Michele Giustina and the motorcyclist Branka are now hunting the girl.
Laurenti learns from his former colleagues Galvano, who is familiar with the family histories of senior citizens Trieste that Salvio Giustina during the Second World War as a Nazi - collaborator had excelled. By denouncing people , he secured ownership of the victims' houses and land in return. A journalist who had made these machinations the content of a report was mysteriously killed before he could publish what he had researched. The explosive documents that prove Giustina's machinations have since disappeared.
When Irina realizes the danger she is in, she turns to Galvano, whom she had often met on her begging trips and who had always treated her well. She hands him the folder with the documents and hopes to get rid of her pursuers. She also gave him a luggage storage ticket that she had found in Piazza Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo and had pocketed. In sign language , she asks Galvano to go to the train station for her and to get the deposit slip. When he comes back with a bag, there is a large amount of cash in it.
Based on the ballistic investigations, it is likely that Pietro Giustina was shot by his own brother, which is also confirmed by the kiosk owner who witnessed the incident. An attempt to arrest Michele Giustina fails because Laurenti's superior Questore opposes it. The search for Irina, who was named as another witness by the kiosk owner, is also difficult because Galvano has hidden the young woman with him. He soon receives a visit from Michele Giustina, who demands the documents from him. At the same time, the motorcyclist Branka finds her way to Galvano, so that Giustina has to leave without success. However, Branka manages to take Irina hostage. She wants to exchange the girl for the money. So Galvano turns to Laurenti, who goes with him and accompanied by Sgubin to the agreed delivery point. However, Michele Giustina also found out about the handover date and appears heavily armed with his people. Since a special task force has attached itself to Michele's heels and followed him, an exchange of fire ensues in which the last Giustina is shot by an officer of the SEK, while Branka disappears with the money. Laurenti says he had everything under control, the shot at Giustina was completely unnecessary and an execution. He did not, as suspected, grabbed a second weapon, but wanted to hand him a name tag, an old tradition that symbolizes the downfall of a family.
When Branka brings the booty back to her client, the underworld king Viktor Drakic, he shoots her in cold blood. Commissario Laurenti, on the other hand, is celebrating a party with family and friends in his garden on the occasion of his wife Laura's birthday, to whom he dedicates a song he has performed.

criticism
Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv gave the film 2.5 out of a possible 6 stars and rated it cautiously: “With Laurenti, the 'Italisation' works worse than with Brunetti. Case 4, 'Death casts long shadows', is also a lower-middle-class thriller. It starts with a shot of action: A grandson of an unscrupulous, right-wing businessman is killed in a street shooting. Because the expensive crime novels from Trieste are apparently supposed to bring something to everyone, they get bogged down in their trivial stories. Tension-free, poor action, overloaded with big names. A single money destruction machine. "
The film service only wrote: “(TV) crime thriller from a series in which the northern Italian city of Trieste is the setting for organized crime and the entanglement of politics and crime. - From 14. "
TV Spielfilm gave the worst rating (thumbs down) and said: “Even celebrity actors like Barbara Rudnik or Katharina Thalbach unfortunately remain pale here. The snoring staged fourth Laurenti case looks about as authentic as a palm landscape photo wallpaper. ”Conclusion:“ Long shadows? Probably rather underexposed ”(later edition:“ Yes, yes long shadows - simply underexposed ”).
Kino.de saw quite differently ; There the series and this film were rated very positively: “A high-gloss thriller that, with all the love for the show values of the illustrious setting of Trieste, does not lose sight of the suspense. The Laurenti films do not follow the classic Whodunnit pattern - the bad guys are certain from the start - but regularly head for a dramatic showdown. Rather, however, the films live from the idiosyncrasy of their protagonists and his constant skirmishes with higher authorities. Henry Hübchen is simply a stunner in this star role. "
