Hans Karl Georg Curt Pavel , since 1913 by Pavel , (born May 19, 1851 in Tscheschen , Wohlau district ; † January 17, 1933 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general and 1901-1903 commander of the protection force for Cameroon .

Life

origin

Curt was a son of Johann Rudolph Pavel (1822–1876), Herr auf Tscheschen (1840–1851), Mangschütz and Neusorge (from 1851) and his wife Anna Henriette Mathilde, née von Schweinichen (1827–1905). His brother Max von Pavel (1849-1908) became a Prussian lieutenant general.

Military career

On April 7, 1868, after visiting the cadet institute, Pavel joined the Infantry Regiment No. 38 of the Prussian Army as a characterized porter ensign . There he was promoted to second lieutenant on January 15, 1870 and took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . In 1878 he became a prime lieutenant , in 1885 a captain and company commander and in 1894 a major . In 1895 he took over as commander of the 4th battalion in the infantry regiment "Vogel von Falckenstein" (7th Westphalian) No. 56 . In 1900 he was transferred as a lieutenant colonel to the staff of the infantry regiment "Kaiser Wilhelm" (2nd Grand Ducal Hessian) No. 116 in Giessen .

Pavel was appointed commander of the protection force in Cameroon in May 1901. In November 1901 he led the operations against Ngwe , Bafut and Mankon (II. Ngwe Expedition), to which he joined an expedition to Banjo and Lake Chad without an order from the governor. As part of this measure, he placed the Sultanates of Mandara , Bornu , the Kotoko states and the Shua Arabs under German "protection" and replaced the provisional French occupation of the Lake Chad area with his expeditionary force . Since he was acting contrary to the express instructions of Governor Jesko von Puttkamer , he was given leave of absence and recalled from Cameroon.

Pavel's differences with the governor formed a culmination of the conflict between the civil administration and the military that simmered in Cameroon during the German colonial era. Ultimately, the occupation of the extreme north of the colony - sharply criticized by Puttkamer, but vehemently demanded by the military and colonial economic lobby in the empire - was essentially Pavel's work, even if it was thanks to the breakup of the Adamaua empire by the British and the French beforehand Victory over the usurper Rabih b. Fadlallah met with little resistance from the population and largely took place without violent clashes. Despite his open resistance and thanks to the support of the colonial department, Pavel was able to continue his career.

Return and First World War

After his return to the Prussian Army in 1903 he was appointed commander of the 7th Baden Infantry Regiment No. 142 . In 1907 he was promoted to major general and as such he became commander of the 60th Infantry Brigade . On March 22, 1910 he became lieutenant general , briefly acted as commander of the 31st division until April 24th and then took over the 39th division in Colmar in Alsace . These he commanded to 21 March 1912 and then to the disposition provided.

At the beginning of the First World War , Pavel was appointed commander of the 28th Reserve Division , with which he was deployed on the Western Front . The division was first used in the Vosges and then in French Lorraine . In mid-September 1914, his division moved to the area west of St. Quentin on the Somme , where it remained in defensive battles for the next few years . General Pavel held his command in the area west of Bapaume until January 3, 1916. After his appointment as general of the infantry, he was retired from active service.
