The place name, which comes from Sorbian, means something like "Netherlands" or simply "sink" and fits the geographical location of the place.

geography

Due to its structure, Döhlen can be described as an extended farming hamlet. The village is located at the foot of the Hromadnik . The neighboring towns are Pielitz in the west and Rachlau in the east. Between Döhlen and Rachlau, the Rachlau dam is the largest stagnant body of water in the municipality of Kubschütz.

history

The place is mentioned in 1416 as Delin, later also Delan (1433), Dhelen (1564), Doelenn (1569), Dählen (1574) and Döhlen (1657). Döhlen was parish first to Bautzen and then to Großpostwitz until the 18th century , before coming to Hochkirch because of disputes following a murder case .

In 1884/85 the scientist Arnošt Muka recorded 105 inhabitants for Döhlen, 101 of whom were Sorbs . Since then, the use of Sorbian, like almost everywhere in the Protestant part of the settlement area, has declined sharply.

Personalities

The future pastor Jan Kilian was born in Döhlen in 1811 . With him in 1854 about 550 Sorbian emigrants moved to Texas (mostly to Serbin ).
