history

Rieschen - with the approach from Blösa

It was first mentioned in 1475 when Leuther von Schreibersdorf on Holscha sold the feudal estate "Gresschen" to the Bautzen council for 45 Rhenish guilders. It is assumed that the place name is derived from the Slavic personal name "Zrěša". It is possible that the Bautzen citizen Otto Greschin, listed in the Dingbuch between 1365 and 1377, came from the village. As a result of the Pönfall, the city of Bautzen lost ownership in 1547. One half of the eight properties owned by “Gerschen” became subject to the bailiff, the other half to the Doberschütz manor. In 1593 the place was first called "Rieschen". Over time, the forests on the northern slope of the Mehltheuerberg were partially cleared and the almost one meter deep loess clay cover on the granodiorite could be used for agriculture. Several elongated stone ridges date from this time and are now covered with hedges.

During the Battle of Bautzen, Rieschen was burned down on May 21, 1813; Only a stone slab from 1734 remained, which was later set into a barn wall. From 1844 the construction of the railway from Bautzen to Löbau took place through the hills between the Binnewitzer Wasser and Albrechtsbach . In 1936 Rieschen was incorporated into Rabitz. Together with this, it was incorporated into Jenkwitz in 1950. The village has been part of the Kubschütz community since 1994. Rieschen is part of the Bautzen parish of St. Michael.

Population and language

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 49 inhabitants in the 1880s; 48 of them were Sorbs and one German. The language change to German took place in Rieschen in the first half of the 20th century. Since then, the number of Sorbian speakers has steadily decreased.
