Jeßnitz , also called Jessnitz , in Sorbian , is a hamlet in the municipality of Kubschütz in Saxony , which belongs to the district of Grubditz . It is part of the official Sorbian settlement area in Upper Lusatia .
geography
The hamlet is located southeast of Bautzen on the right bank of the Binnewitz water. In the southeast the 384.2 meter high Mehltheuerberg rises , south the 412.4 meter high Schmoritz and the 431.9 meter high Thromberg . Jeßnitz lies on a cross of five streets.
history
The "Jesnicz" estate was first mentioned in 1356 as the property of Jan von Jesnicz. It was probably built as a single farm during the colonization period. It is believed that the Binnewitz water was originally called "Jasenica" (Sorbian for "Eschenbach"; jaseń = "ash tree") and that the place name is derived from the brook. In 1427 the estate was called “Gessenicz”, in 1456 “Jessenicz uf dem Falkenberge” and from 1468 “Jeßnitz”. The owners of the estate were mostly of bourgeois origin. Gut Jeßnitz was the pioneer of potato cultivation in the area around Bautzen. In 1762 the "Erdbirnen" were grown on an area of two bushels. From 1763 onwards, the manors served their servants with potato dishes for lunch and dinner. To distinguish it from Jeßnitz bei Neschwitz, the place was called Dürr Jesnitz from 1768 and Dürr Jeßnitz from 1791. Although the manor had previously been referred to as a manor, it was not included in the list of the Upper Lusatian manor until 1832. In 1945 the estate was nationalized and continued as the “Fritz Joß” estate. It was later connected to the state-owned Gut Pommritz .
Jeßnitz was never independent. Until 1973 it was part of the municipality of Grubditz . With this the incorporation to Jenkwitz took place. The village has been part of the Kubschütz community since 1994.
Atonement stone
To the south-east of the village there is an atonement stone on an old path to Mehltheuer. It shows the number 1669, an ax and two faces. The stone commemorates the murder of the farmer's wife, Martin Tauch, of her two youngest children, whom she was unable to feed due to famine and who were killed on December 9, 1669. The murderess was executed with the sword on February 6, 1670 in Jeßnitz and the house was torn down. The stone originally placed on the site of the house was later moved to the scene of the murder.
