geography

The hamlet is located southeast of Bautzen at the foot of the Mehltheuerberg . Daranitz only consists of a few homesteads. The railway line from Bautzen to Löbau runs past to the north.

history

The Bautzen council village "Torgenitz" was first mentioned in 1534. The place name is probably derived from the Slavic personal name "Torgon". In the Bautzen court book of 1599 an estate was named "Darentz". Around 1800 the residents of the village paid protection money to the Bautzen hospital for the holy spirit. From 1844 the construction of the railway from Bautzen to Löbau took place through the hills between Binnewitzer Wasser and Albrechtsbach . In 1936 Daranitz was incorporated into Rabitz. Together with this, it was incorporated into Jenkwitz in 1950. The village has been part of the Kubschütz community since 1994.

The oldest surviving farmhouse dates from 1853; two cannon balls from the battle of Bautzen are walled in below the half-timbered upper floor.

Population and language

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 38 inhabitants in the 1880s; including 36 Sorbs and two Germans. The language change to German took place in Daranitz in the first half of the 20th century. Since then, the number of Sorbian speakers has steadily decreased.
