geography

The Bauernweiler is located southeast of Bautzen in the Lausitzer Bergland. Großkunitz lies at the foot of the 380.1 m high Schafberg am Sattel between the 412.4 m high Schmoritz and the 514 m high Hromadnik in the basin of the Kunitz water . The 431.9 m high Thromberg rises to the east .

history

The settlement was probably created in the Middle Ages by the Pielitz manor as a forest cut. "Chogenitz" was first mentioned around 1400. It was apparently founded independently of the other settlements in Kunitzer Grund, Kleinkunitz ("Coynitz parvum"), which can be proven since 1419 , as the forest on the corridor border was largely preserved. To distinguish between the two hamlets subject to different manors, the place was referred to in 1419 as "Coynitz superior". Großkunitz always remained associated with the Pielitz manor, which ran a manorial sheep farm above the village on Schafberg. The sheep farm was given up in the 19th century and the Schafberg was reforested. A windmill was operated on the Schafberg for a while, which is why it is sometimes called the windmill mountain. Since the area surrounded by mountain forests had only a small amount of arable and meadow areas, the residents of Großkunitz worked in the quarries on the Hromadnik for their livelihood. In 1936 Großkunitz was incorporated into Rachlau and in 1974 came to Kubschütz together with him .

Population and language

Sorbian was spoken by the majority in Großkunitz until the 20th century. According to Arnošt Muka , Pielitz and Großkunitz had 172 inhabitants together in 1885, 137 of them Sorbs (79.6%) and 35 Germans, 12 of whom were also Sorbian. The Großkunitz students went to school in Rachlau.
