geography

The hamlet is located southeast of Bautzen in the foothills of the Lusatian Mountains . Rabitz consists only of a few farmsteads, including a four-sided courtyard and the “Zur Goldenen Höhe” inn, which are located around a meadow on the Rabitzer Bächel. The inn was demolished in 2012. The railway line from Bautzen to Löbau runs past to the south. Rabitz is surrounded by granodiorite dome with remains of quarries and arable land on loess loam and sandy soils. The meadow valley of the Rabitzer Wässerchen has preserved its originality on the railway line. The Gauchheil honorary award , whistle grass , turf , Prussian laser herb and devil bite thrive in the ground .

history

The Bautzen council village "Grabis" was first mentioned in 1476. The place name is probably derived from the Slavic word "hrab" ( hornbeam ). In the 16th century the village was called "Grabitz" and in the 17th century "Gräbitz". Later, the name "Rabitz" arose from this through Germanization. The residents of the village bought themselves free from their submission to the Bautzner Council for protection money. Rabitz was burned down on May 21, 1813 during the Battle of Bautzen. From 1844 the construction of the railway from Bautzen to Löbau took place through the hills between the Binnewitzer Wasser and Albrechtsbach . The ceremonial opening of the line on December 16, 1846 failed because the train with the guests of honor southwest of Rabitz got stuck in the cut because of snow drifts. In 1950 Rabitz was incorporated into Jenkwitz. The village has been part of the Kubschütz community since 1994.

Population and language

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 50 inhabitants in the 1880s; among them were 46 Sorbs and four Germans. The Protestant Bautzen dialect of Upper Sorbian was spoken in Rabitz. The language change to German took place around the middle of the 20th century. Today, Sorbian has largely disappeared from everyday local life.
