The games for the DHB Women's Cup, which was played for the fourth time in 1978, included several preliminary rounds for the first time. All clubs in the 1st Bundesliga and the winners of the previous cup competitions in the state and regional associations were eligible to participate. All main rounds took place in May and June 1978, as the state and regional cup rounds were played beforehand. The field of participants was divided into a north and a south half until the semifinals, with the Berlin clubs being assigned to the south. Only the semi-finals were drawn freely, with a north and a south duel. The only league team in the field was TuS Preußen Vluyn , all other participants played in the national or regional league, which at that time represented the second highest division. The final took place on June 18, 1978 in Vellmar , Hesse . The TuS Eintracht Minden defended the title in the final against the third division TuS Metzingen and thus won the first double in the German women's handball. Finalist TuS Metzingen represented the Federal Republic as a regional league team in the European Cup Winners' Cup the following season , but was eliminated in the first round against the Dutch representative Swift Roermond .
