Services

journalism

During his studies, Böhmer began to write for Spiegel Online and Spiegel Kultur on literary topics, especially young German authors, European and non-European literatures. From 2006 he worked in the politics department of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and from 2007 was the editor of the German Vanity Fair responsible for international politics. Böhmer has been an editor in the international section of Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag since 2009 .

Bohmer's particular interest is Afghanistan and Pakistan . In 2007, he was the last German journalist to conduct an extensive interview with the Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto , who was murdered shortly afterwards .

In an interview with Böhmer and Michael Stürmer , the Afghan warlords Raschid Dostum , Zia Massoud and Mohammed Mohaqiq declared their opposition to President Hamid Karzai and the demand to negotiate with the Taliban themselves . Observers saw this as a sign of an impending civil war after the withdrawal of the international protection force ISAF at the end of 2014.

After the assassination attempt on the then 15-year-old education activist Malala Yousafzai in 2012, Böhmer was the only German reporter who was able to visit Yousafzai's school and interview classmates and teachers. Since 2009 Böhmer has published several reports from Afghanistan and the Pakistani tribal areas.

After Deniz Yücel 's imprisonment , he handled the case for the joint employer Die Welt and kept in regular contact with him through Yücel's lawyers. In addition, together with Doris Akrap and Özlem Topçu, he wrote a foreword to the new edition of Yücel's book Taksim is everywhere . For his achievements in this regard, Böhmer and other participants were awarded the special prize “Journalists of the Year” 2017 .

Book publication and reception

In 2013 his documentary book The Major Who Outwitted the War was published , for which he spent three months in the Afghan-Pakistani border area. In it he tells of an old British major who founded a school in Chitral in the Hindu Kush that primarily promotes the disadvantaged girls in the region and teaches the English language. Daniel-Dylan Bohmer's book reads like a fairy tale, the story could also be the material for a feature film, says Sabina Matthay. But for all his sympathy for the major, for the people in Chitral and for Pakistan, Böhmer did not suppress the contradictions that consumed the country and its citizens. His book is a political analysis that the author combines with precise observations, expertise and clear language. It fills a gap in German-language literature on Pakistan.

Wolfgang Günter Lerch emphasizes that Böhmer does not succumb to exoticism, instead informs the reader about the area where the school is located, about Indo-British history and the religious, ethnic and political implications and traditions.

"The excellently researched and brilliantly written book reports on the peace experiment of this old warrior who, surrounded, almost encircled by Islamist fanaticism, wants to raise many hundreds of children to be free, independent people and is apparently very successful with it."
