Daniel Majstorović (born April 5, 1977 in Malmö ) is a former Swedish football player of Serbian origin. The central defender has both Swedish and Croatian citizenship . In his active career he played outside of Sweden in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece and Scotland, and between 2003 and 2013 he played 50 international matches for the Swedish national team .

Career

Club career

Majstorović played in his youth at Övergrans IF and Habo FF . The first stop in higher-class men's football was IF Brommapojkarna from 1995 . During the winter break of the 1997/98 season he moved to SC Fortuna Köln in the 2nd Bundesliga . There he was a regular player straight away and scored his only goal in German professional football on March 14, 1998 in a 1-1 draw against FC St. Pauli . With a yellow-red card on the last day of the match, he said goodbye to Fortuna and returned to Sweden.

Majstorović went to Västerås SK . The club was relegated from the Allsvenskan in the preseason and just missed direct resurgence with Majstorović as third in the table. In the following year only a midfield position was achieved, which at least meant qualification for the new single-track second division . When the promotion was missed again in the 2000 season, Majstorović left the club after two and a half years at the end of the season and moved to the Allsvenskan at Malmö FF .

In the first division, Majstorović was able to establish himself straight away in the starting eleven and in the second year the club succeeded in runners-up behind Djurgårdens IF . With the club he was able to establish himself in the front of the table and with 18 season games he contributed to the championship title in the 2004 season . In the same year he was voted the most unpleasant opponent by the opponents in the league, but moved to FC Twente Enschede that same season .

Also in the Eredivisie Majstorović sat in the starting line-up. In January 2006, however, he attacked his teammate Blaise Nkufo so hard during training that it almost broke out into a fight. After Majstorović was late for training a week later, he was released from the club because of this lack of discipline. He then moved to FC Basel , where he scored five goals in the remaining 18 games of the season. With the club he won the Swiss Cup in 2007 and 2008 and won the Swiss championship title in 2008. Shortly after the end of the season, it became known that the defensive player with a strong header was leaving his previous employer for AEK Athens . The free transfer Swede signed a three-year contract with the Greek club.

On August 16, 2010 Majstorović signed a contract for two seasons with the Scottish top club Celtic Glasgow . Right off the bat, he temporarily replaced the injured Scott Brown as team captain . While in the championship behind local rivals Glasgow Rangers the second place in the table was occupied, he reached the 2011 cup final with the team. At the side of Emilio Izaguirre , Glenn Loovens and Mark Wilson , he prevented FC Motherwell from scoring in the defensive row and thus contributed to the 3-0 success and title win. However, the following season was overshadowed by bad luck with injuries. First he was injured in mid-December in a collision with David Robertson from FC St. Johnstone , so that he was out for several weeks with a cheekbone fracture. After returning to the team at the beginning of February, he was injured a few weeks later while staying with the national team. In training, he was injured in a duel with Zlatan Ibrahimović , a cruciate ligament rupture temporarily ended the season for him and also put an end to hopes of participation in the 2012 European Championship finals.

The meanwhile contractless Majstorović returned to his home country in the summer of 2012. In May he signed a contract with AIK that will be valid from August - this month opens the summer transfer window in Sweden - and will run until the end of 2014. In summer 2013, however, he fell out with coach Andreas Alm and the club management, and his contract was finally effective in early June dissolved on January 6, 2014. In February 2014, he announced the end of his active career to begin training as a player agent and join the business of his former advisor Rodger Linse .

National team

Majstorović made his debut on February 16, 2003 in the 3-2 victory over the country selection of Qatar in the King's Cup in the Swedish national team . Four days later he scored his first international goal in his third international game in a 4-1 win over North Korea with the goal of the meanwhile 4-0. In the following years he was used only irregularly and was part of the extended national team of Sweden before the 2006 World Cup , but was ultimately not taken into account. Since he was in the starting XI in the international matches against Turkey and Brazil in 2008 , he was considered a promising candidate in the fight with Olof Mellberg , Fredrik Risp and Petter Hansson for a midfield place in the Swedish national selection at the European Championship 2008 . When national coach Lars Lagerbäck announced the squad on May 13, 2008, Majstorović was part of the 23-player squad. The team failed in the tournament in the preliminary round.

After the Swedish national team failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals , Majstorović was one of the candidates for another final round after successfully qualifying for the 2012 European Championship . Due to injury (see above), however, he missed the tournament. Until the summer of 2013 he was still a member of the national team, after his resignation at AIK he was without match practice and national coach Erik Hamrén resigned from his services after 50 international appearances.
