Wedding of Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, and Daniel Westling: Arrival for the presentation of the Reichstag in Konserthuset on June 18, 2010

In 2001 Westling met the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria , four years his junior, in his sports club and became her personal trainer . The fitness trainer and the princess often met in the studio, later also privately. The couple managed to keep the relationship a secret for about a year before the Swedish tabloid Expressen made the liaison public on May 30, 2002 . The following year Westling and Victoria were seen making their first public appearance together at a friend's wedding. Despite the great media interest that the civil partner of the future Queen of Sweden experienced and the critical coverage, the relationship continued. He has since been traded as the future Prince Consort . Westling, which the Swedish press generalized as "uneducated" and "not befitting" because of his provincial origins and his profession, sought advice from a PR agency and changed his appearance in public. According to Swedish media reports, he had to go through numerous further training courses for the sake of royal representation and learned English intensively . Westling also rose from a partner in his company to its CEO and ran three fitness centers in downtown Stockholm. In the run-up to the engagement, he withdrew from the management and the supervisory board, as this was not considered appropriate for a member of the royal family. However, he still holds shares in the company.

The couple, who share a common passion for skiing, lived alternately in Victoria's apartment in a wing of Drottningholm Palace and in Westling's apartment in central Stockholm. The two were regularly seen together at private occasions, and the untitled Westling was not allowed to make official appearances at the royal court due to the lack of engagement.

In Sweden there has been regular speculation about the couple's wedding, for example in October 2007 when the press department of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs listed possible additional expenses under the heading “Preparations for a royal wedding” in a budget for 2008 . Spokesmen for the Swedish Royal Palace and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs then denied the couple's possible marriage plans. In December 2007, the Crown Princess herself fueled rumors of a possible wedding in 2008.

In May 2008, Westling accompanied the Crown Princess for the first time to a celebration of another royal family and they appeared together at the birthday party of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark .
