The B-Team: Restricted and On Probation (Original title: The Parole Officer ) is a British crime comedy directed by John Duigan from 2001.

action

Probation officer Simon Garden, who has so far only successfully traced three offenders back to the path of virtue, is being transferred from Blackpool to Manchester . When he is supposed to take care of his newest protégé, the notorious car thief Kirsty, he meets the attractive policewoman Emma and invites her to dinner. Kirsty's case soon leads Simon to a strip club, where he witnesses a man named Deacon being killed by the corrupt Inspector Burton. When Simon escapes from the club, he loses his wallet, which is found a short time later next to Deacon's headless body. After his arrest, Simon makes a deal with Inspector Burton. He is released and scheduled to leave Manchester. When he learns that Burton is about to receive a medal for bravery, Simon decides to convict Burton and his henchmen and to prove his innocence. To do this, however, he needs the videotape of a surveillance camera that recorded the murder in the strip club. Because the same videotape is deposited in a bank locker, he persuades his former protégés George, Jeff and Colin to help him break into the bank and steal the videotape. They receive the appropriate equipment from the wife of the master thief Victor.

During the preparations, Simon and Emma get to know each other better. When Simon and George, Jeff and Colin catch Kirsty trying to steal his television one evening, they make her their accomplice, as she is petite enough to get into the bank through a shaft. With their help, they also succeed in smuggling a robot with a camera into the vault of the bank and thus accessing the secret code. When Emma stopped by Simon's one evening and found his former protégés with him, Simon told her that he had founded a self-help group. Emma starts kissing Simon, but then sees the equipment for the planned coup and wants to know the truth. Simon tells her that Inspector Burton committed the murder of Deacon. However, because he doesn't want to tell her what he needs the equipment for, Emma leaves his house disappointed. After Emma implied to Inspector Burton that he was suspected of murder, Inspector Burton had Simon's house ransacked, where he was secretly hiding Deacon's head in the refrigerator. Kirsty tries to make the head disappear in time. However, a saucepan turns out to be a bad hiding place and so Simon, George, Jeff and Colin are finally arrested. Kirsty then drives a stolen van against the wall of her prison cell and tears it down. Simon and the others jump into the car and take Kirsty to the bank to put their plan into practice.

While a computer virus spread by Colin triggers all alarm systems in the city and thus causes chaos, Simon and the others get through the roof into the bank. However, when they have difficulty opening the safe, Victor suddenly shows up and helps them. In addition to the videotape, they steal a bag full of money that Inspector Burton made in drug deals from the safe. When the police threaten to catch them, all but Simon run away. Thanks to Emma, however, Simon also manages to escape. With the videotape and his accomplices, Simon appears at City Hall, where Inspector Burton is awarded the Medal of Bravery. By giving Simon her gun and pretending to be his hostage, Simon makes himself heard in front of the police chief and the invited guests. Victor, disguised as a police officer, ensures that the videotape is played on a screen in front of everyone present. Unmasked as a murderer, Inspector Burton reaches for Simon's gun and threatens Kirsty and then Simon. Emma had previously removed the bullets from the gun and knocked out Inspector Burton. He and his henchmen are then arrested. While Victor secretly makes off with his wallet, Simon and Emma seal their mutual affection with a kiss.

Reviews

Sight & Sound's Kim Newman found the film, as a "decent Steve Coogan vehicle", was "amusing, if seldom as funny as Coogan's best work" as a comedian over long stretches. In comparison with the bank robbery comedies Ladykillers and Das Glück Came Overnight, the film lacks “the depths of one and the quirkiness of the other”.

The lexicon of international films complained that the film, which was conceived as a number revue, "lacks the gags". In the end, it is just a “string of embarrassments”. For Cinema , Das B-Team: Restricted and on probation was an “[a] old-fashioned, silly burglary film in which gunslingers and big gags are balanced”. He was "[b] cracked, but overall entertaining".

Individual evidence

  1. “[T] his modest vehicle for Steve Coogan […] is at least amusing most of the time, if rarely as painfully funny as the best of Coogan's work. As a heist comedy, it invites comparisons with The Ladykillers (1955) and The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), but it lacks the darkness of the former or the sustained whimsy of the latter.
