action

Part 1

David was abandoned in front of a monastery as a child and raised by monks . Otherwise he seems to be an ordinary kid. That changes when the 18-year-old goes to a party with his girlfriend Stella shortly before graduating from high school. In an argument with Stella's ex-boyfriend, he suddenly reveals undreamt-of physical strength and effortlessly defeats his opponent. When a bottle is hit over the head of David, the wound heals in minutes.

When David nevertheless goes to the doctor on the advice of his girlfriend, the doctor discovers something unusual in his blood. The doctor immediately informs mysterious clients.

The monk Quentin, in whose care David grew up, learns of the incident. He knows the connections and immediately informs Robert von Metz. This is the current grand master of the legendary Knights Templar . The Order is in a bitter dispute with the Prieuré de Sion . This secret society split off from them in the early days of the Knights Templar. The Grand Master Lucrezia de Saintclair desperately wants to get her possession of the Holy Grail and the other relics that belong to the treasure of the Knights Templar.

On behalf of the Grand Master, Ares and the assassin Shareef break into David's room, but only find the young man who was injured by David and who wanted to take revenge. You soon realize the mistake. Robert von Metz tries to get David out of the country, but is involved in a sword fight with Ares and the assassin at the airport. David frees himself from a van and ends up on the run in Lucrezia de Saintclair's car.

At the headquarters of the Prieuré, Lucrezia explains to him that he should actually know her. In a sword fight, Ares, Lucrezia's brother, pierces David's body. But this is soon healed again. The Grand Master explains to him that she is his birth mother. (David was stolen from her at the baptism of Robert von Metz, who originally wanted to kill him.) But Lucrezia is far from sentimental feelings. She only wants to use David to defeat her archenemy.

Meanwhile the Templars around Robert von Metz have been informed of David's abduction. David is Robert's rightful heir as Grand Master of the Templars and is also the son of Lucrezia de Saintclair. Robert of Metz decides to get rid of David to prevent a union with the Priory.

When David wants to meet his girlfriend Stella, the Priory decides to kill her. The Saintclairs also lure Robert von Metz to the meeting place in order to blame him for the murder of David's girlfriend. Stella is ambushed by an arrow from the assassin. Ares quickly brings David away from the scene. Robert von Metz takes the injured Stella with him to the castle of the Knights Templar.

The boy continues to be manipulated by his mother and incited against the Knights Templar and Robert von Metz. He is taught sword fighting by his uncle Ares. He also tells him that his wounds heal quickly, but that he is not immortal as a result. If his artery is hit or important organs such as the heart are injured, the blood loss is too great. The task of the Prieuré de Sion is to preserve the bloodline that is said to have been founded by Christ and Mary Magdalene.

Soon David is ready for the great battle against the Knights Templar. David and the members of the Priory enter the Templars' headquarters. After fighting with some Knights Templar, David arrives in the tomb of the Temple Masters. There he faces Robert von Metz in a direct duel. But shortly before he wants to stab the Grand Master of the Templars, he learns from his girlfriend Stella that Robert is his biological father. His parents are the leaders of the two warring groups.

Part 2

David changes fronts and takes his father's side. David, Stella and Robert flee the castle through a secret exit, all the other Knights Templar were killed. Lucrezia arrives and sees that she has won nothing. She demotes her brother Ares and hands over the command to Schareef.

David, his father and Stella hide in an abandoned, multi-story garage. Lucrezia inspects the temple masters' tomb with Shareef. The temple master Anjou is exhumed on their orders. Lucrezia is concerned with the ring of the former temple master. The ring bears the inscription in hoc signo vinces and is said to have belonged to Emperor Constantine . In the meantime, Ares has located David using a chain that his mother gave him and that sends out radio signals. Ares and the assassin Shareef follow Stella, Robert von Metz and David in a car hunt in the garage, but the three escape.

David receives a Swiss passport and credit cards from his father. The three decide to take possession of the shroud, which is in the headquarters of the Prieuré des Sion and which is an important key in the search for the Grail. They are surprised by Ares and Shareef. David and Stella are separated from Robert by a grille. This is now in the power of Lucrezia. Before he dies, Robert can throw his sword through the bars for his son. He takes it and flees with Stella, while Lucrezia's henchmen murder his father.

David and Stella, disguised as monks, find refuge in a monastery. Here they also meet the monk Quentin again. Ares goes to look for David. As the monks sit in silence at table, among them David, Stella and Quentin, Ares appears in the monastery. While the monks stop Ares, the three of them escape. Ares is chasing them. David stands up to him as he drives towards her at high speed in the car and slashes the car with his sword. This then ends up in the lake, Ares frees himself from it. However, David and his girlfriend have escaped again with Quentin.

After a few attempts, David finds out that the hollow sword handle can be detached. In it he finds the tip of Longinus' sacred lance . On the shroud is the map of the catacombs of Rome, and on it the path to the Holy Grail can be determined through notches in the tip of the lance.

When they arrive at the Vatican, Quentin, Stella and David look for their way through the catacombs. Lucrezia and Shareef as well as Ares are also in Rome and follow them. Finally, Lucrezia and Shareef meet the trio in front of the tomb of Emperor Constantine, which can be opened through the tip of the lance. When Lucrezia enters the crypt with David, Shareef and Ares stay behind with the monk and Stella. Ares sees his chance to gain sole possession of the Grail. He stabs Shareef from behind and sneaks after Lucrezia and David.

In the final fight, Ares and David face each other. Quentin and Stella, who have arrived, try to stop Ares. The monk is injured, Stella throws his sword to her friend, with which he is superior to Ares. Ares dies from David's sharp blow in the chest.

David smashes the container that contains the Grail, a stone tub in which the blood of Christ is said to have been collected. Lucrezia takes David's hand, who is injured in the fight, and lets blood drip into the tub, which then multiplies. Lucrezia drinks from it to become immortal, but blood seeps out of all her pores, she breaks down with the words: "It was probably not meant for me" and dies. David covers the Grail again with the banner of the Knights Templar. After they close the burial chamber by removing the lance tip from the rock, Quentin, Stella and David leave the catacombs.

background

The film takes up numerous conspiracy theories related to the themes of the Knights Templar , the Holy Grail and the Prieuré de Sion . Motifs from films such as Highlander , Star Wars , Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Legacy of the Knights Templar were also borrowed.

The German author Wolfgang Hohlbein wrote the novel for the film, based on the script by Stefan Barth and Kai-Uwe Hasenheit . After the success of the book, Hohlbein and his daughter Rebecca wrote a prequel novel entitled The Night of the Star .

In order to reduce production costs, the shooting took place in Lithuania : the University of Vilnius and the moated castle in Trakai were used in the film. In addition, the film studios on the outskirts of Vilnius were rented for 6 months. The production designer Frank Godt created the Templar Crypt, the catacombs of Rome and Lucrezia's headquarters in three halls along with 16 other interior sets. On the set there were Lithuanian sound engineers, Czech stuntmen , a Polish leading actress, a German director and a corresponding number of interpreters .

The set-up of the film was also unusual for a television production: around 46 tons of building material had to be transported over a bridge to the Trakai moated castle, 45 swords were forged, and 28 stuntmen, some of whom had previously worked on films such as Gladiator or Titanic , were hired . In addition, around 600 costumes were created, 35 liters of fake blood were shed and 150 wounds were made.
