The Colbys - The Empire is an American television series that was broadcast on the US broadcaster ABC from 1985 to 1987 . The series comprises a total of 49 episodes of around 45 minutes each in 2 seasons and belongs to the genre of the soap operas of the 1980s , such as The Denver Clan , Dallas , Under the California Sun , Falcon Crest , Flamingo Road or Sweet Poison . The theme song was composed by Bill Conti .

backgrounds

The series The Denver Clan (in the original: "Dynasty" ) achieved the highest ratings in the USA, so ABC decided to develop an offshoot in 1985 . The offshoot series should revolve around the family of Jeffrey (Jeff) Colby, who lives in Los Angeles / California. Similarly, it was before, a few years of CBS with Dallas and its spin-off Knots Landing made.

Many of the storylines of the two series overlapped, and some actors ( John Forsythe , Gordon Thomson , Jack Coleman and, in several episodes, Diahann Carroll ) from the main series took on guest appearances initially. The title melody starts like Dynasty , but then becomes a bit more pompous. The intro is also the same as in the main series: stripes that run from the bottom to the outside of the picture and the title logo: "The Colbys", which is drawn into the picture with stripes when the camera moves over the house. In the German version, the camera stops directly above the house and the words Das Imperium - Die Colbys are faded in.

Introduction / crossover

In the Dynasty episode "The Californians" (in Germany: "The Festival of the Titans") the actors of The Colbys are introduced to the audience: Blake Carrington invites the Colbys to Denver to show the press at a big ball about the cooperation between Denver Carrington and Colby Enterprises on a gigantic pipeline project. His aunt Constance gives Jeff her 50% stake in the family business Colby Enterprises and asks him to come to California. Jeff, who had been desperately looking for his ex-wife Fallon Carrington for more than a year, who disappeared without a trace and allegedly died in a plane crash, decides to accept the gift. On the night of the party, all of the Colbys are at the Carrington house except for son Miles. He is still on the way to Denver and has a young woman in his car whom he had met shortly before and who is suffering from amnesia. Arriving at the Carrington estate, the young woman refuses to go in for fear. Jeff looks out the window and recognizes Fallon, who was believed to be dead. Before it reaches the forecourt, the Ferrari races away ...

The next day the Colbys fly back home, and then in Los Angeles events rush ...

action

The Colbys live in the upscale neighborhood of Los Angeles, Bel Air, and live in a huge estate with a large house. Jason runs Colby Enterprises with offices around the world. His wife Sable owns the Colby Collection gallery , she is cultured, vicious, scheming and hungry for power. In addition to their son Miles, a playboy, they also have 2 adult daughters together. Bliss is the typical rebellious teen with constantly changing friends. Monica feels underutilized in her job at Colby Enterprises , not fully accepted by her father and takes over the management of Dominique Devereaux's record company Titania Records . The good soul of the house is Connie, Jason's older sister. It is also she who asks Jeff's mother, Francesca, to come back to Los Angeles to finally be able to help her son after many years of abstinence. Francesca was married to Connie's and Jason's brother Philipp before he died in the war, and had a secret affair with Jason years ago. She lives in London and initially refuses to return. Jason's great adversary and competitor is Zachery "Zach" Powers, who blames the Colbys for his father's death. He tries to force his way into every Colby Enterprises deal and discredit the Colby's.

In the last episode of the series, "A Very Unbelievable End" (in the original: "Crossroads"), many events remain unexplained: Sable kidnaps the adopted son of her daughter Monica. Miles' pregnant wife Channing leaves the Colby estate to have her baby aborted. Frankie is kidnapped by Philipp and the car has a serious accident. Both are thrown out, Philipp has disappeared and Frankie is bleeding profusely in Jason's arms. Fallon, who is driving her car in the Nevada desert, is looking for her mother-in-law Frankie when her car suddenly stops. The headlights go out and the car phone stops working when she tries to call for help. Suddenly everything around her is brightly lit. She gets out of the car, looks at the sky and a few seconds later a spaceship lands in front of her eyes. As if hypnotized, she is pulled into the UFO, it takes off and she is kidnapped inside ...
