action

The film tells the story of the Conclave of 1458 from the perspective of the young Spaniard and Cardinal Vice Chancellor Rodrigo Borgia . His uncle, Pope Kalixt III. , is dying. In the city of Rome there is unrest and resentment about everything Spanish, especially the Borgia . Rodrigo Borgia is fetched by his lover Vanozza and informed of the death of his uncle. Together with his brother, Captain Pedro Luis Borgia, he is now in mortal danger, as the Orsini family in particular wants to regain their lost privileges by fighting the Borgia family.

While his brother fled Rome, Rodrigo Borgia made it to the conclave: the meeting of the cardinals to elect the new Pope from among their ranks . The two most promising candidates are the calculating Frenchman Guillaume d'Estouteville and Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini from Siena. In the following, the politicizing and maneuvering of the candidates for votes is shown, which above all reveals the character of all cardinals. In the meantime, Pedro Luis Borgia was murdered by a knight on behalf of Cardinal Orsini.

After the papal election has stalled, it is Rodrigo Borgia who takes the decisive step and helps Piccolomini with a majority of votes to the papacy. In the end, Rodrigo Borgia, who was initially irreligious and not to be taken seriously, earned a certain respect from the other cardinals. He returns to his beloved.

Reviews

“Perhaps the Catholic Church is also trying to take advantage of this contemporary sex appeal by supporting screenings of the film. The remarkable thing about The Conclave is not the surface stimuli, but the portrayals of the old church princes and their persistent tug-of-war for the highest position in the name of the Lord. "

"The staging at television game level relies on the charm of the keyhole perspective and conveys too little of the historical background of the characters and the circumstances of the time."

"The historical drama tries to deliver a moral picture of the time and knows how to put the event in a broad, historical context. [...] But it also makes Rodrigo a romantic hero who returns to his lover after work is done, even though the one in the In the meantime also had a visit from an Orsini. That doesn't quite fit the historical figure of Rodrigo Borgia. One can even say that Schrewe makes the buck into the gardener here. After all, the later as Pope Alexander VI. (through massive election manipulation) to the epitome of papal decadence, greed for power and immorality. Rodrigo's lack of restraint is representative of the bad reputation of the entire Borgia clan. "
