Location of Davenport in Lincoln County

Davenport is a city with a status of City and the county seat of Lincoln County in the US state of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Davenport had 1,734 residents.

history

Davenport was first settled in 1880 and named after the resident JC Davenport in 1882. The city was declared a county seat on December 15, 1896 after an election Davenport had designated as a replacement for the former county seat Sprague , which was destroyed in a fire; the second applicant was Harrington .

Davenport was officially recognized on June 9, 1890. Davenport gained early prominence in the north-central portion of the Columbia Basin in east Washington because of its citizens' successful lobbying and in 1889, instead of the rival Wheatdale, the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway stopped off . The transcontinental Northern Pacific Railway (NP) formed a subsidiary, the Central Washington Railroad (CW), to build a competing rail line that reached Davenport in February 1889. A branch line of the Great Northern Railway (GN) was built from Bluestem to Davenport in the 1920s.

Davenport is centrally located in the northern wheat belt of the Columbia Basin, where dry-field wheat cultivation on the hills not washed away by the massive Missoula floods 14,000 years ago is critical to the region's agriculture. The Davenport Union Warehouse and the Odessa Union Warehouse operate several granaries of various ages and looks in the southern part of the city. A few of these buildings date back to the early days of the city's history. Davenport still serves as a collection point for wheat, most of which is shipped by truck or rail. While the majority of exports is some still find their way into the flour mills of Archer Daniels Midland in Spokane and Cheney . Locally grown barley also finds its way to some west coast breweries and other consumers.

The Primary State Highway 2 (also called "Sunset Highway") ultimately ran together with the CW line from Coulee City via Davenport to Spokane. The route is known as US Highway 2 , but in many places does not follow the original route of the Sunset Highway. The Primary State Highway 7 crossed also the Primary State Highway 2 in Davenport and is now part of Washington State Route 28 . The Primary State Highway 22 ran from Davenport to the border between Canada and the United States near Northport . This is now Washington State Route 25 .
