Death to Smoochy ( Death to Smoochy ) is a comedy film by Danny DeVito from the year 2002 .

action

Randolph Smiley aka Rainbow Randolph hosts a television program for children, but is involved in corruption deals. For example, an undercover FBI investigator offers him a not inconsiderable amount of money so that Randolph can get his son on stage. When Randolph agrees to the deal, he is arrested. His reputation is gone and his show is canceled by the television station "kids network". In his place comes Sheldon Mopes alias Smoochy the Rhino, an unsuccessful entertainer with ideal world airs and a pure vest appearing in a purple rhinoceros costume.

As Mopes becomes more and more successful, Smiley becomes homeless. He developed plans how he could disrupt the broadcast of Mopes, but failed for the time being. Mopes is interested in his colleague Nora Wells, with whom Smiley had an affair earlier, but who separated from Smiley. Smiley ensures that the previous affair is known, which hurts Wells.

After Smiley had Mopes appear at an event of fascist Hitler worshipers on the pretext that it was a charity event, Mopes' good reputation was almost destroyed, but due to his contacts with the Irish Mafia, the scandal was cleared up.

Mopes becomes involved in business with the Irish Mafia. The mafiosi demand that the boxer spinner be advertised on his show. Spinner has the mental level of a toddler after numerous head injuries in the fights and is sometimes confused.

The TV show's manager, Burke Bennett, also hires a sniper to kill mopes during his show, as he donates the show's proceeds to charity. The attack is prevented. Smiley pours gasoline over himself at its lowest point, but is prevented from lighting by a little girl.

In the end, Smiley and Mopes decide to run the show together.

Reviews

James Berardinelli compared the film on ReelViews with a Coke that had been in an open container for two days. You can drink it, but it doesn't taste good. Berardinelli praised the “manic” portrayal of Robin Williams, which caused most of the laughs. The talents of Edward Norton and Catherine Keener are "largely wasted".

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on March 29, 2002 that you need "tremendous ambition" to make such a "bad" film.

“The interesting cast comedy is just a sequence of over-the-top incidents. The potential of the basic idea is wasted in favor of a garish satire that has no sense of nuances and their characters. "

“The Gaga world of the Teletubbies is a grateful satire object - unfortunately director Danny DeVito forgets a clear plot out of all the gossip. Conclusion: overshot well. "
