The Patriot is an American biopic by Ernst Lubitsch from 1928. The film is based on the five-act drama "Paul I." by Dmitri Mereschkowski , the novel "The Patriot: Drama in 5 Acts" by Alfred Neumann and the play " The Patriot ”by Ashley Dukes. He describes the conspiracy that the death of the Russian I. Tsar Paul led. The film premiered on August 17, 1928.

The Russian Empire in the 18th century. Tsar Paul I sees himself surrounded by intrigues and murder plots. His only confidante is Graf von der Pahlen . He wants to protect his friend, but the confused and sometimes cruel orders of the ruler convince him that Paul should abdicate. The tsar has the soldier Stefan flogged for not having the correct number of buttons on his gaiters. Stefan joins forces with the count.

Crown Prince Alexander hears of the Count's intentions and warns his father. The Tsar, who does not love his son, puts him under arrest on false charges. The count's lover, Countess Ostermann, is supposed to lure the tsar into her apartment, where she is supposed to inform him about von der Pahlen's plans and to induce him to abdicate. The tsar orders the count to come to him, who assures him of his loyalty.

When Stefan and the Count go to the Tsar's bedchamber later that night, he is dead. Stefan pulls out a pistol and shoots von der Pahlen. The countess appears and rushes to the dying man, who says: "I may have been a bad friend and lover, but I was a patriot."

Awards

In 1930 the film was nominated five times for an Oscar, namely in the categories of Best Film , Best Director (Ernst Lubitsch), Best Actor (Lewis Stone), Best Screenplay (Hans Kraly) and Best Production Design ( Hans Dreier ). The film won the Screenplay Oscar.

The complete film is considered lost . The special thing was that music, sound effects and dialogues were recorded afterwards. In addition to some fragments, only a single roll of film has been preserved, which the "Portuguese Film Archive" has been keeping since 2001. Overall, the remaining pieces of film amount to a length of about six minutes. It is the only production nominated for the Oscar for best film that has been lost or of which only fragments are left.

The budget for the film is estimated at approximately one million US dollars.

Several Germans were involved in the film: director and editor Ernst Lubitsch, screenwriter Hans Kräly, the author of the novel Alfred Neumann, leading actor Emil Jannings and production designer Hans Dreier. Florence Vidor was the wife of the director King Vidor until 1924 .

Historical background

The film sees itself as the biography of Tsar Paul I. The Tsar ruled from 1796 until his death in 1801. After he refused to abdicate, he was strangled by two men, Subow and von der Pahlen. His successor, his son Alexander, is said to have supported the plans to abdicate, but not the murder. Alexander became Tsar and ruled the Russian Empire until 1825. Count von der Pahlen, Foreign Minister under Tsar Paul, did not die until February 25, 1826.

In 1938 Maurice Tourneur re- filmed Alfred Neumann's novel. Under the title "Le Patriote" played Harry Baur and Pierre Renoir , the leading roles.
