Der Ranger - Paradies Heimat is a German television series that has been produced for Das Erste since 2018 on behalf of ARD-Degeto and MDR . The episodes are about 90 minutes long and will be broadcast as part of the series Endlich Freitag on Erste . The production is carried out by the new German Filmgesellschaft mbH . The main character is Jonas Waldek, who worked as a ranger in Canada for several years . Now he is returning to his home town of Wehlen to work as a ranger in the Saxon Switzerland National Park .

background

When ZDF discontinued the Forsthaus Falkenau series in 2013 after 25 years, the production company NDF was determined to develop a similar, modernized format. The core of the plot this time should be a gamekeeper in Bavaria. The Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk in Leipzig heard of these plans and struck. So the story shifted from the south of the republic to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxony. On the part of the production company, Axel Barth, who already worked on the series Der Bergdoktor and "successfully refreshed" it, was won over as a director for this project - the result is a contemporary and modern Heimatfilm series. Philipp Danne , known from the series In all Friendship - The Young Doctors plays the main role and has lost an extra twelve kilos. The filming location “Saxon Switzerland” was not fully developed until this series of films. 70 percent of the camera settings consist of outside shots - the landscape thus forms the actual attraction.

The shooting of the first two episodes took place in 2018 from May to July in the Saxon Switzerland National Park. When both films were first shown in November of the same year, the series was well received by the public. For the award of the Golden Camera 2019 , the series was nominated along with 14 other productions in the audience vote “Most Popular Home Series”, in which the television viewers chose the winner via SMS and telephone voting, but came away empty-handed. In July and August 2019, the filming of the third and fourth episodes of the film series took place. At the end of July 2020 it was announced that there will be two more episodes that have been shooting since July 21, 2020.

action

Episode 1 - Wolf Tracks

Jonas Waldek worked as a ranger in Canada for 5 years and is now returning to his homeland in Saxony to work as a ranger in the national park. In his hometown, the city of Wehlen, he lives on a farm with an attached sawmill. Since his brother's death, his mother and sister-in-law have run the sawmill and earn a living from it. In an effort to preserve the unique landscape and wildlife in the national park, his job is a constant balancing act between nature conservation and economic interests, because the whole region lives from tourism. There are problems in particular with the mining entrepreneur Karl Nollau, who is also the landlord of the Waldeks. He wants to put his disused mine in the protection zone of the national park back into operation in order to mine lithium and does not take any account of game and nature. Jonas receives support from the behavioral biologist Emilia Graf, who is also tracking down a wandering wolf in the national park. The ranger's family also felt the consequences of the conflict with Nollau, as the ranger wanted to cancel their lease in order to destroy their livelihood. On the other hand, there is an old lease document in which the Waldek family has transferred the farm and sawmill - but this has unfortunately been lost for many years. The search for this certificate takes Jonas and his family to their limits.

Episode 2 - Fatherly Love

After the lease was found, the existence of the Waldek family is secured again and the dispute with Nollau is settled. Still, Jonas doesn't trust him. Especially when he revealed his plans to focus entirely on tourism and therefore to expand his old mountain tunnel with a climbing park. But the ranger has other problems - the number of apparently wanton destruction has been increasing in the national park for some time. Damaged signposts are still the slightest problem, because the perpetrators do not even shy away from luring tethers on hiking trails and climbing paths, for example. Jonas suspects that these actions are intended to deter hikers and climbers in order to damage tourism in the long term. Jonas and his colleagues are alarmed and vigilant, but there is still a climbing accident due to a loose tether - and of all things during the preview of Nollau's rocks for the planned climbing park. When there were also inconsistencies in the rangers' clarification of this act, Nollau sensed a plot against himself and the dispute with Jonas broke out again. When the perpetrators hit Nollau's mining museum short and sweet, the conflict escalates with him and puts Lukas, Jonas' nephew, in mortal danger.
