action

The orphan boy Toni Ferency, who came to Austria with refugees from Hungary , missed his bus to continue his journey and was taken in by the former Danube captain Blümel together with his dog Flocki, whom Toni is very fond of. The old man has a little house in the Wachau . Toni and Blümel get on very well and do a lot together. When Blümel and Toni visited the church in Dürnstein and heard the singing of the Vienna Boys' Choir , who were singing High Mass , the boy was deeply impressed by their singing. He talks to his foster father about the singing boys and learns that they are world famous. It occurred to Blümel that Toni would be suitable for the Boys 'Choir and so he decided to travel with the boy to Vienna to introduce him to the Boys' Choir.

After Blümel is harshly turned away by the porter of the home of the Vienna Boys' Choir, he gets into a conversation with what he thinks is a gardener, who turns out to be the director of the house and ensures that Toni can audition. He passed the exam with Kapellmeister Schmidt with flying colors and was accepted into the Boys' Choir. Saying goodbye to each other is very difficult for both the old man and Toni. It is Sister Maria who helps Toni overcome the first pain of separation. Toni gradually sees something like his mother in Maria and the young sister also takes special care of the orphan.

The Vienna Boys' Choir spend the summer, like almost every year, in their holiday home in Hinterbichl in East Tyrol . Her planned American tour should also be prepared there. Sister Maria and Kapellmeister Schmidt are connected by a beginning love. Schmidt has composed a symphony and hopes to be successful with it - also to then ask Maria for her hand.

When 1000 Schillings disappear from Sister Maria's room, Toni is suspected of having been observed by a comrade as he got into Maria's room during the night. He had put a bouquet of edelweiss he had picked herself on Maria's desk. The boy who blackened him had lost his solo role as "Jugend" from Raimund's Der Bauer als Millionär to Toni. When Toni is asked about this and he is told that only he or sister Maria could have taken the money, he stands protectively in front of Maria, whom he loves as if she were his mother, and confesses the deed.

When his foster father Blümel penetrates him, who doesn't believe in Toni's guilt, the boy no longer knows what to do and runs away - and falls into a rocky canyon. Toni is seriously injured and is struggling with death. In the meantime, the 1000 schillings that got caught between notes have also found themselves again. Toni will be completely healthy again and of course will be accepted back into the lap of the choir boys. The boys' choir embarks on its American tour. Toni will sing the solo parts.

criticism

The criticism from Cinema was not very friendly with the conclusion: "You should get the cane out."

Even the lexicon of international films could not win much from the film and wrote: "A lying touching piece with some beautiful nature shots that uses the refugee problem as a hook for many songs by the choir boys."

Cinefacts, on the other hand, judged: "A heart-touching film against a contemporary background."
