Reviews

The film convinced 73% of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 6.67 out of a possible 10 points.

In the online edition of Die Zeit , Barbara Schweizerhof notes that it is considered normal for male investigators in films to appear drunk and tired of life. A similarly run-down woman, however, does not easily find audience sympathy. Schweizerhof notes on Destroyer , who has received mixed reviews since its premiere, the feminine point of view and the will not to appear nostalgic under any circumstances.

In Variety , Peter Debruge finds that Destroyer lifts the limits of what an actress can show on screen. You now have the opportunity to create a character that is difficult, mean and almost completely independent.

Rolling Stone's Peter Travers writes about Nicole Kidman that the actress has never looked so devastated and shows the audience "how much her psyche has been hurt."

The film service assesses the film as an “exciting mixture of an action-packed police thriller and an oppressive portrait of a severely traumatized woman who is struggling with the ghosts of the past” and praises Nicole Kidman's “extraordinary [it]” play.
