The South Nilandhe Atoll , official name Nilandhé Atoll Dhekunuburi , with the Thaana short name ދ( Dhaalu ), is an atoll in the western island chain of the Maldives . The geographical atoll is congruent with the administrative atoll ( province ) Dhaalu .

geography

The South Nilandhe Atoll is six kilometers south of the North Nilandhe Atoll (Faafu Province) and 17.8 km north of the Kolhumadulu Atoll . The atoll is about 140 km away from the Maldivian capital Malé .

The atoll extends from north to south over 38 km, from west to east over 23 km. The total area is 736.46 km². Of this, 179.40 km² is reef area and only 4.40 km² (440 hectares ) is the land area of ​​the 53 islands, of which only seven are permanently inhabited today and two more ( Meedhuffushi and Velavaru ) are classified as " tourist islands " ( resort ) are. In 2006 the atoll had 4,720 inhabitants.

The main island of Kudahuvadhoo is located on the southern rim of the reef .

¹⁾ Gemendhoo was completely evacuated after the tsunami on December 26, 2004 . Most of the residents moved to the main island of Kudahuvadhoo. However, Gehemdhoo is still classified as an inhabited island.
