occupation

The Night of the Great Flood is a German television film produced for NDR in 2005, which depicts the events of the storm surge in Hamburg in 1962 as a docu-drama .

action

Using the Brandt and Langer families, the film depicts the fate of the residents of Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg on the night of February 16-17, 1962, when dikes broke in Hamburg as a result of the 1962 storm surge and flooded almost a fifth of the city's area. The hopes of the Hamburgers concerned rest on the police and interior senator Helmut Schmidt , who heads the crisis team . The plot of the film is supplemented by interviews with the eyewitnesses depicted (including Helmut Schmidt, Maximilian Alber and Gerda Brandt).

production

The production company Cinecentrum Hamburg shot in March and April 2005 with 50 actors and 600 extras in Hamburg and in Lübeck-Schlutup, among others . The effects were realized by flooding the scenery, but also by computer animation. In order to realistically depict dike breaches, models were built that were placed under extreme water pressure.

publication

The premiere was at the Hamburg Film Festival on September 26, 2005, the first broadcast was on October 28, 2005 on arte . A DVD was also released containing an interview with Helmut Schmidt and a making-of as bonus material.

reception
