Dieter Timmermann (born July 16, 1943 in Friedrichsdorf, Stargard / Mecklenburg district ) is a German education economist, education planner and former rector of Bielefeld University . On December 1, 2011 he was elected President of the German Student Union.

Life

Dieter Timmermann attended elementary school in Emden , the Ulrich-Gymnasium von Norden (East Friesland) and the modern-language Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium in Bonn , where he passed his Abitur in 1962. This was followed by a degree in economics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn, which Timmermann graduated in April 1968 with a degree in economics . From 1968 to 1974 he worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin ; there Timmermann received his doctorate rer. pole. In April 1974 he became a research assistant at Bielefeld University. In 1977 he received a one-year research grant from the German Academic Exchange Service for the USA , which he held at the Department of Economics and the School of Economics at Stanford University . With his work on Prosperity and Depression of Higher Education: Some Theoretical and Empirical Considerations with Respect to the US , Dieter Timmermann completed his habilitation in 1979 and received the venia legendi for Educational Economics and Educational Planning. In 1979 he was appointed lecturer and in 1982 professor for the field of educational planning and educational economics at Bielefeld University. Timmermann was Vice Rector for Teaching, Student Affairs and Continuing Education from 1996 to 2001 and Rector of Bielefeld University since 2001. After being re-elected in July 2004, he was succeeded by Gerhard Sagerer in October 2009 as rector.

Dieter Timmermann is married and has two children.
