The Leoncio Prado district is located in the Huaura Province in the Lima region of western Peru . The district was established on January 30, 1953. The district was named after Leoncio Prado (1853-1883), a Peruvian military who fell in the Battle of Huamachuco.

The district has an area of ​​295 km². The 2017 census counted 2058 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2063, in 2007 it was 2012. The district administration is located in the 3278  m high town of Santa Cruz with 143 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santa Cruz is located 75 km east of the provincial capital Huacho .

Geographical location

The Leoncio Prado district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the east of the Huaura province. The Río Huaura flows in the extreme northwest along the district boundary to the southwest. The extreme northwest of the district is traversed by the Quebrada Paran in a west-northwest direction. The remaining area is drained via the Río Chico, left tributary of the Río Huaura.

The Leoncio Prado district is bordered to the west by the district Sayán , in the northwest on the district Paccho , in the northeast on the district Checras , on the east by the district Santa Leonor , in the southeast of the district Veintisiete de Noviembre and in the southwest of the district Ihuarí ( the latter two districts in Huaral Province ).
