The Oropesa district is located in the Quispicanchi province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of 74.44 km². At the 2017 census, there were 9444 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 5410, in 2007 it was 6432. The district administration is located in the small town of Oropesa with 4411 inhabitants (as of 2017). Oropesa is located 24 km east-southeast of the regional capital, Cusco .
Geographical location
The district of Oropesa is located in the Andes in the far west of the province of Quispicanchi. The small town of Oropesa, at an altitude of 3110 m , is located in the river valley of the Río Huatanay, a left tributary of the Río Vilcanota (upper reaches of the Río Urubamba). The ruined city of Tipón is located on the northern slope of the valley .
The Oropesa district is bordered to the west by the Saylla district ( Cusco province ), to the north by the San Salvador district ( Calca province ), to the east and south by the Lucre district and to the southwest by the San Jerónimo district (also in the Cusco province) .
